"Really that corrosive?" Sort of like a little pregnant! It is or it isn't and it is.

Guess the OP hasn't visited the C&R Gallery. Based on this thread, I'd say a few more of you haven't visited it either....

Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...

What would you guys recommend I look for for a first Enfield? Frankly, I am intimidated by the amount of variants that exist, how is one to know what is desirable, what is not so great? I would want a shooter, under $500.00 but with some collect-ability.

What should I be looking at and yes, I know I missed the boat with the last batch of AIM Jungle Carbines but I had other stuff in the pipeline that took up my C&R fund.

Re: "really that corrosive". I've used corrosive ammo for 20 years. Over that period I've discovered that Russian ammo isn't as bad as Turkish ammo but still isn't as good as Yugoslavian etc. All the grey beards at my gun club threw fits when I got a couple hundred rounds of Kynoch mk VII ammo, telling me its so corrosive my rifle will basically melt. These guys aren't novices, several of these guys were schooling me in corrosive ammo when I was a teen and they were in their 50's, how far we've come now!

Aye. Luv 'em. No. 1 Mk III* & No. 4 Mk I ... wee rough round but they're mine.

You can find them for about $300 in original condition and with strong rifling. They most likely will have some character marks but noting that would affect the function or safety of the rifle. The No.4 Mk.1 or Mk.2 are probably the most common variants you will find, but No.1 Mk.IIIs do come up from time to time in decent shape. If you are really lucky, you can find one still one wrap. Pricing for that will be around $900-$1,000.

Look for matching numbers on the receiver and the bolt. The action should be smooth and almost effortless to operate. If the bolt sticks, it's usually a sign to walk away. If the bolt serial number doesn't match the receiver, check it with a field gauge or a go, no go guage. You can buy a different bolt head to correct the headspace issue but I'm not very familiar with how to tell you what you would need to make it work.

                      I am not a fan but I do own a No 4 Mk1 and two 1917 U.S.

What were they (the British) thinking when they designed this thing (lee Medford family)?

I've got a Long Branch No 4 and a ROF jungle carbine. The jungle carbine shoots Hornady Vintage Match really well.

Big fan of the late model MK2's.

Recently got a set of consecutively serialed MK2's, one still in the wrap and one out and cleaned up, but unfired.

I've got another MK2 that has been cleaned up but unfired also

Mine was given to me but with a new stock and scope. It was given to me by my stepdad as my first rifle to hunt with.

The numbers on the rifle are all matching, 1944 dated, the mount is a different number as is the scope. They are fairly close. I wish I had more info on it.....
