Trust me Auction is the way to go.

It's how I have instructed Cheryl to dispose of my firearms when I reach room temperature. Trust me when I tell you a 20-25% fee will be a fair chunk of money for my collection, but it is the only way to be sure Cheryl will get anywhere near the true value.

I worked for a very honest gun shop in Arizona for a spell. We had to offer below market value to make money reselling. And trust me it was more in the neighborhood of 50% below what we thought we could sell it for. Shops make peanuts on new guns, and need to make the operating costs of the store up on used items and accessories. They may be the most honest shop in the world, but they exist to turn a profit.

So do auction houses, but the return is much easier, faster, and more profitable for the seller.

Travism, my prayers are with you and your family having gone thru this once already and watching it start again I know how hard it is.
The great thing about this site is the info you can get just for asking a question, there has been some very good advice and I hope you take the time to go thru these and find one that you will keep for a reminder of your dad. One thing is to take your time if you can.

It probably took you Dad years of research and buying to get to this point. It would be sad to just dump them because of time restaints. I would take the time to sort them out and see what your Dad really liked, pick some to keep in the family and start to sell off the rest. There should be no hurry, the value only increase with time.

Here's what I suggest before anything else. My 02, but I've bought and sold quite a bit.

1. make a list of each gun. year, model, condition (good, very good, excellent)
2. post it up here or on gunboards. we can get you a pretty good appraisal.
3. then, armed with information, you can decide whether to sell via forum, gunbroker, or auction house.

more information is always good. what have you got to lose but an evening's time?

unless your collection is really huge (as in more than 300 guns) this is pretty doable, especially if you do it in 50-gun chunks. shipping a gun isn't hard. boxes aren't expensive, and it is very possible than many of your guns will sell FTF here in CA.

no DROS, paid in cash. you could do this out of your own garage.

heck, if it's only a hundred guns, I could probably give forum-market prices myself via email.

If you do not catalog them yourself you can never be sure of lost items.

My grandfather had three Japanese swords from WWII and was in the process of trying to sell them when he died. One dealer had found a Japanese buyer for one at $25K. There was another appraised at $5k and a more common early 20th century sword.

We found this out later when that dealer wanted to know what happened as he was looking at a 20% commission fee.

Instead my family (sister) did an estate sell and also sold the house and received just a small amount of money for the household items, mostly it was for convenience to get the house empty.

.....and so the mystery of the Japanese sword that went missing, as the estate dealer swore they did not receive the most valuable Japanese swords or any at all....maybe they did, maybe they did not...

....also the US Calvary sword my Grandfather told me many a time I would receive and was in his will also went missing and was apparently picked up by a distant relative as they told my sister they were to receive it and so she gave it to the.

There are to many vultures around the death of someone. I hate the dealers.

Those that would profess convenience at these times of disposing of everything with a simple pen stroke and give you gobs of money scare me the most.

KEEP ALL THOSE RIFLES. GET THEM INDIVIDUALLY APPRAISED.

The vultures prey on the most valuable and undervalued items to make their profit.

YOU MAY HAVE SOME GEMS!

After you appraise them yourself on Gunbroker (like the diamond wedding or engagement ring if you bring it in for appraisal they will swap it down for you and profit the difference) you can figure out the best course of action.

APPRAISE THESE YOURSELF BEFORE INVOLVING AN OUTSIDE PARTY!

Then get the 10% most valuable professionally appraised after cataloging and taking pictures to prove theft if you get swapped during appraisal Sell off these most valuable yourself or separately.

Then take out he family jewels that are the ones that bond you with your family.

For the remainder you can give them to the clearing house of convenience and let the merchants profit of your misfortune.

You would end up getting next to nothing for them.

Do you have any idea what he charges for a sellers premium? Or how much typical C&R's sell for at Little John's?
