need to sell alot of C&R's

My dad has about 100 different C&R rifles that he bought on a C&R license. He did not keep records as he should. Unfortunatly he is getting mildly demented and does not know what they are. He needs to sell them for financial reasons. I dont have a clue what they are. I also dont really have an intrest in C&R. Where and what can i do? Take pictures and post them on this web site? He went to Little johns auction house and they told him they would auction them and take 33% I think he could sell one by one better

Try to take pictures of as many as you can, I'm sure many people on this forum can help you identify them and will probably buy a few.

By the way, where are you located?

You could probably post them for sale on here. I'm sure the chaps will help and advise the best way to liquidate your dad's collection legally and in compliance with the C&R laws.

I wouldn't lets someone take a cut that big to sell of my collection but it depends on if you have the time or not. I would either post pictures here and see what we all can do. The downside is you would have to take a lot of pictures for us to give an good description of them other than just naming what it is. You might also want to consider asking if someone local would want to help you out during their free time. I know I wouldn't mind helping someone sort through rifles if i had free time and was local.

If you have a few months free time you should have no problem selling them here on the forum.

Just spend a few hours with each rifle, taking pictures, noting the conditions of all of the parts and especially the bores, checking for matching parts, uploading the pictures to your server.

After you have them all listed in the for sale forum, just sit back, relax and wait to answer hundreds of questions from tire kickers, low-ballers. The guns won't sell for close to what you'd get at an auction, but at least you'll have peace of mind knowing that you didn't rip any of us off.

If you are lucky you will find buyers close to you. That way you can just arrange 100 meetings with strangers to transfer the rifles, or you can invite them all over to your home for the transfers. If the buyers are too far away you can always just ship the rifles. All it will take is 100 rifle shipping boxes and 100 trips to your local Post Office.

Although I am always on the lookout for good C&R deals now, I have to agree with Amendment II above. Go the auction route. Look into several auction houses and negotiate the fee. In an auction, you will be sure you got the best price for each firearm and did not lose any because your audience was too small. You will know that nobody cherry picked their favorites first, and you will not have to deal with the hassles of selling a C&R rilfe 100 times.

Don't forget too, that some of your fathers C&R rifles may not be simple C&R transfers in California. If he picked some up while out of state, they may be less than 50 years old. An Auction house will conduct all 100 transfers legally for you.

It seems overwhelming, but negotaite the fee to somewhere closer to 20%, and you will be far better served using a house.

+1. I have sold C&R rifles via various boards. You may make more, but it's a almost full-time job. And if YOU don't know what you're selling, you'll (A) make less than you should by underselling (B) potentially piss off or alienate buyers but not being able to supply the detailed info they seek before buying. Just have an expert help you out, unless you want to BECOME an expert...

I agree, get them to 20-25% and it's a fair deal. Just avoiding having to pack and ship some of them is worth that.

With so many C&R rifles, it will make sense to run them through Little Johns auctions.

The problem with auction houses is that it is a limited market for your goods.

With that many firearms you could saturate the market and actually lower the price. (although sometimes people do bid outrageously for guns)

Unless you need all the cash right NOW it is not the best option IMHO, you can only sell them once and it sounds like your dad will need all the cash he can get out of them.

Bills show up gradually, it shouldn't be hard to sell the guns off a few at a time without involving an auction house or third party broker. you should be able to sell them off, meet the bill payments and make the most of your assets.

If you would like some help with this I'd love a chance to poke around in someone else's gun collection. (and not to toot my own horn, but I'm prety up to date on what fair market price is on most C&R firearms)

Regardless, don't get panicked into a fire sale.

First of all I am sorry to hear about your father's declining mental health. I just hope that he is given all the love and support from his family through these times. First of all I am no doctor and just trying to give some friendly advise, try giving your father fish oil pills the omega3 in them will really help him out. I think these days doctors are quick to over prescribe meds that cost an arm and a leg and in the end leave the patient feeling worse off then before.

As for the C&R rifles I wouldn't go thru an auction house. I believe you would come out on the short end getting less than what your father paid for them all. Remember to say within the law, not everything that is classified as C&R is actually C&R in CA. Meaning only rifle that are over 50 years old qualify for cash and carry sells. Here's a link that you can use as a guide line as for a pricelist, http://www.fo.com/cr-buds/prices.asp

After going through your father's collection who knows you may get bitten by the C&R bug and might not sell as many has you have planned. Good luck with your final discission.
