Sure there are ways to do it, if you have third party software involved. Seems a bit unwieldy to me, but my needs are different.

A user can go online, install the free version of MyGunDB, hop onto dropbox's site and download their encrypted database and they're up and running. No third-party configuration needed, nothing to install and no worries about the encryption system working multi-platform.

On the other hand, for FFL users, as just one example, may only need their DB stored on their main computer and/or a backup drive -- in that situation encrypting the drives wouldn't be a big deal since the encryption system would only have to be setup once. I guess it depends on the end user's needs and situation.

NM Collector Software is not a "catch all" software. It simply uses a more flexible template approach to collections so different templates can be used for different purposes.
Heh that's sort of the definition of catch-all. Nothing wrong with that at all; it's pretty useful and I meant it as a compliment.

Thanks to the forum administrators and moderators for allowing us this band width and opportunity to discuss issues and make clarifications about the whole issue of Electronic Bound Books and gun collecting software.
Agreed -- I'm not here to pimp out my program; I'm just glad to have the chance to discuss the inner-workings and concepts of our, and others, programs. Discussion just leads to improvements everywhere, which is great for the end user.

Hell, through this discussion we figured out a way to offer BATF logging for those who want it and to remove it for those who do not -- already a win right there

How do you get away with a signature that has a link to your software page? I usually get banned from forums when I do that even when I point to completely free software.

Honestly? I don't know, but it's probably that I generally only post on forums about my prog when someone else brings up my program and I'm offering support, and the forums I do post on regularly know me from the beta threads since my program was a community effort. Or I've just been lucky. I'd wager the latter.

I started with the sig because on forums it's hard to know I'm the developer when I post since I use my personal account. If my sig violates the rules, I'll gladly remove it without hesitation. I have no desire to cause trouble.

And, keeping up with that previous sentence, I'm going to back out of this thread some as we're a bit off topic

Just to be clear, the topic is "Electronic Bound Book." Until I asked about your .sig that is exactly what I thought we have been discussing.

Great conversation Collector and wolfrage. Thanks for the insight on your software. When I get back home I'll check them out.
            Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

Database Encryption option available in next release of NM Collector Software

Not sure how that could be done using TrueCrypt easily.

I like the idea of users being able to access their data however they want, but oddly enough I've never gotten that request - they generally just want a few specific reports and that's it. Then again, I guess there's a difference in usage between a firearm digital bound book like MyGunDB and a catch-all inventory system like NMC. Makes sense.

Interesting. Always neat to see a different perspective!
My next release (now in beta testing) of NM Collector Software will offer a database encryption option for those who want it. That, of course, will lock them out of accessing the database outside of NM Collector so, for those who want to use other tools to access their data, they can leave the database unencrypted.

I have also made a long overdue usability improvement to the tree view buttons. Here is a link to screen capture of the changes.

Also, here is an embedded picture of the same screen capture:
