I love my russian '53 SKS. It has been a great shooter all the way out to 200 yards with irons. I can consistently hit the gong at 200 all day with wolf or golden bear ammo. I find the russian and albanian versions are better finish and so long as you can get them with a decent finish, they look nicer IMO.Comment

Learned a lesson on my Yugo: I installed a Murry's spring-loaded pin and Wolff trigger springs to lighten the pull a bit. The combo reduced the FP impact to the point that I couldn't shoot hard-primer ammo (Wolf, etc.) but my reloads with commercial Win. primers worked fine. I ended up removing the Wolff springs and now she shoots anything i feed her.
Just passing on the experience...Comment

Yeah, all the Keng's Firearms Specialty (KFS) SKS's that were made in the 50's were all made to Russian Specs if im not mistaken. A friend of mine has one (made in '57 or '58 I believe), and its a really beefy rifle and believe it or not, its really accurate out to about 300 yards even with the irons on it.
KFS was an import company, not a manufacturer. I don't believe there is any relation to time of manufacture and any specific importer. I think my Sino was CAI.Comment

I would leave the SKS in the hot sun. Dissemble and let the cosmoline run out and wipe off with hard Q-tips. Use Hoppe's and leave on an hour before removing after doing the sun treatment. It has worked well for me. I should say I normally clean first with scalding hot soapy water in a bucket, than rinse with clean hot water. Than use hair dryer to dry. Than hot sun if needed and use solvents etc. Have been using Frog lube as a cleaner and lubricant and it is nice as it is plant based and not BAD for you or your internal organs.
I am glad others posted about the Murray's firing pin. I don't want any FTF issues, so I will wait more and do some more reading on this.Last edited by Patriot Man; 05-04-2011, 12:12 AM.CGN Contributor,

Would anybody know why the action stays open on the ninth round? I usually have to pull it out and single shot it.Comment

My understanding of the Murray's pin is to deter slam fires. Some people believe in it, some don't. I bought and installed mine as a cheap insurance policy.
The actual design of the pin itself is much better than the stock one, however. The stock pin is a conical shape and the Murray's pin is a tapered shape. I may be naive, but to me, it seems to be a better design.Comment

I have a Murray's in my Yugo. Not one FTF with any type of rounds including Mil. Surp. and I don't have to worry about slam fires. An Armed Society is a Polite Society!Comment

My SKS with original pin has a pierced primer EVERY box of Wolf or milsurp, it can ONLY shoot western ammunition safely. Think this would help? This business will get out of control. It will get out of control and we'll be lucky to live through it.Comment

I was also having this same problem with the original pin. With a full magazine, I'd only get 3-5 to actually fire, and that was with cycling it, reloading it, and then firing it. Lot's of frustration, especially since I have 500 rounds of the stuff.
Installed the Murray's and shot the Russian stuff with ZERO failures. I also cleaned the bolt and left it dry (as recommended in this thread).
I just think the Murray's is a good design that works. From their website:

you got a romanian? that would be my next choice to a Russian or Albanian. i lucked into a Russian so i would accept no less but if i were buying now i'd get a romanian. surplus will likely be corrosive, but wolf claims to be non-corrosive. i only pull mine down completely every 2-3 times i take it out. my Tula eats every ammo without issues and i imagine your Romy should as well. oh, and don't mind Venkman, he never got hugs.Comment
