Just had to renew both my COE and FFL03. I submitted the COE this morning. Interesting part was that I realized my FFL03 is expiring in about 30 days. This is my first renewal, and I was expecting that the FFLC would have mailed a renewal notice and packet. That never happened, and the kicker is that you cannot just download the Form 8 Part II and send it in with your fee payment. I had to call the FFLC in West Virginia and tell them that I never received the renewal packet or notification. It is supposed to me mailed to the address of record approximately 90 days before the FFL expires.

After a long wait on the phone, the polite customer service folks verified my information and emailed me a "duplicate Form 8 Part II" which I completed and shipped off to the FFLC in Portland, OR this afternoon.

Anyone else have experience getting a renewal notice sent to them in a timely fashion before the FFL03 expired, or is it common to have to run the traps like this every 3 years? I was really surprised that it did not work the way it was supposed to since I have not changed my mailing address or licensing information.

I just did my second renewal this year, and got mine about 90 days before expiration date. I got my first renewal like this as well. It could have been a computer glitch or lost in the mail. My renewal this time got processed and mailed to me super fast, only took about 10 days, so hopefully you will get yours processed quickly as well.

My last 3 have averaged 5 to 6 working days.

          nbk992h & DrewN? -

Thanks for the feedback and turn around time information. My experience sounds like a one off, and hopefully the renewal period three years from now is not an issue. Appreciate it.

After years of timely 03 FFL renewals, I never received any renewal packet in 2021, I just let it go. I recently have applied for a new 03 FFL, app and payment send early April, check was cashed a week after it was sent. Haven't heard anything as of yet.

FFL03 was submitted 04/30/2024 and renewal received via mail 05/20/2024, so 20 days in total.
COE was submitted 04/30/2024 and is now 3 days after expiration, still "in process".

Sent my app in early April, took about 30 days to get the new FFL. Just sit tight fer a awhile for the FFL.

aghauler - Will do, for the COE. Good advice, and thanks for the reminder that patience is always a good approach when it comes to all things governmental compliance.

And, just like that, the COE was approved! Makes for a great Memorial Day Weekend and start of summer.

                    FFL03 - 20 days
                    COE - 22 days

Just this morning I received email notification and logged in to my CFARS account and saw where my COE has been approved. Although I have had a Type 03 C&R FFL for a number of years, this is my first COE

Aside from being able to have ammo shipped directly to me, will someone please bring me up to date and enlighten me as to what these two documents entitle me to.

You can acquire C&R long guns in CA directly from private parties without using a FFL.

You can buy or transfer more than one gun every 30 days from/through a dealer (including modern guns, handguns etc).

You can get same day release of any C&R gun including handguns that go through a CA dealer - no 10 day wait.

You can acquire ammunition directly from private sellers in CA without using a FFL.
