When I shot on ranges in Germany in the late 70s I was surprised how close everything was to the ranges. The outdoor ranges had baffles over them to trap rounds from lraving the range. Houses were pretty close to the downrange end. At a smallbore range a hiking path went behind and below the backstop. No one seemed to mind.

this particular one was up a valley a bit away from a town, not unlike how Angeles Range is in Tujunga.

My son is a former Marine (actually he’ll always be a Marine) who has been a private contractor for years working first Afghanistan but now in Germany. He snowboards in Austria not far away. We had tickets to visit him when Covid hit and cancelled. I think the borders might still be closed. His guns have been with me and also my ex wife’s all this time. Can a U.S. citizen who works on a U.S. base own his own guns there?

I don't know about now but when I was stationed there I had numerous firearms. They had to registered with the MPs and if living in the barracks stored in the arms room.

I was in Stuttgart for three years as a federal civilian systems engineer working for 7th Corp. 87-90. I lived on their economy in a German apartment. Because of SOFA - Staus of Forces Agreement, we could bring them from the US via PCS and keep them in our residence. You could also buy them at the barrack's rod and gun club. Almost bought a Walther PPK in .32.
I kept my .38 Smith in my night stand.
