    I got a M44!!! Scope suggestions?

Picked up my first Mosin Nagant today - I don't see any way to get a scope on this. Can the experts educate me a little...
    Thx.

Not sure why'd you want to get a scope on it; not very well known for their accuracy. Best bet is probably a S&K 'scout' style mount where it replaces the rear sight and you use a long-eye relief/extended-eye relief scope.

Agree. Putting a scope on an M44 is like putting a turbocharger on a minivan. Sure you can do it, but it's still just a minivan.

They are highly accurate if you know how to shoot them. Pistol scopes can be put on them easily and can help you see what you are shooting at. "Can't hit what you can't see"

Go to http://www.surplusrifle.com/mosincarbine/index.asp to learn the tricks to shooting them accurately. You will also find how to scope them.

            Darrell's scope mount:

and just get a cheap 2-7X32 scope, some surplus ammo and your set!

If you put a scope on it, you should really put a different stock on it, as well. Those bands and top handguard clamp the barrel down into the stock and it can cause contact with the stock, which compromises accuracy.

I am actually about to put a Huber concepts trigger and a new stock on my M44. Midway has black composite Nagant stocks on sale currently...

S&K scout mount with weaver base
                    Leupold low mount rings
                    Simmons 2-6x pistol scope

Couldn't be happier with the setup. Accurate for what it is, can shoot minute of zombie at 100 yards easily. Probably been through 200 rounds at least with the setup and the scope/mount holds a solid zero.

Yes I realize full well that I could've had 2 more mosin nagants for the price of the mounts + optics.

got one of those on my M44 they are really good. A lot more confortable for long shooting sessions.

On the subject though. I have a NC star which I want to upgrade to a real scope anot some non ajustable POS. So avoid NC star like the plauge.

hey now.... in 88-90, dodge did put out a turbo 2.2 minivan you know... with mild mods, they can turn out 12 sec 1/4 miles!

                          Visibility...

Being able to see 100+ yds at what I'm shooting at is my main motivation. Looking into the ATI setup but seems a little labor intensive. We'll see, but thanks- lotsa great info/pointers!

False analogy. Given that Zaitsev a) Used a new production rifle, b) used a 91/30, C) used a rifle that had not gone through the war, d) used a rifle that was not given the small amount of care that a typical mosin has gone through, your statement is totally incorrect.

A run of the mill M44, with a worn crown that might be counterbored, has worn lands, and pitting in the barrel, is not going to be a "sniper" with or without the addition of a scope.

You're preaching to the choir with me on Mosins. I own 6 Finnish M39s, a Finnish M27, a Finnish M91, a Finnish 91/30, a regular 91/30, M44, and M38. I'm pretty confident in saying that the M44 is NOT the one known for being an "accurate" rifle, or worth putting a scope on. Typical Russian Mosins have not been well cared for, both before and after their arsenal refurbishment. They are nowhere near close in quality both barrel-wise and overall quality control wise as any typical Finnish Mosin.

If bcali wants an accurate Mosin, he can either hand pick a Russian one that does not have the usual signs of wear, or he can get a practically new Finnish Mosin Nagant; if he/she takes the latter route I sincerely hope he does not ruin it by drilling a scope on it. I rest my case.

if you get a scope, get the cheap scout mount and use the factory leaf sight pin and pin that baby in...

if you get the scout mount, get a decent cheap scope...
                              walmart or ncstar should work

if you do that stuff, you might as well get the ATI stock...

I've only tried up to 100 yards and it shoots fine for a cheap beaten down and resurrected rifle...

I also have an M38, that cost half as much as my M44, for some reason when I shoot off sand bags I can shoot a group similar to the M44.

bottom line: its not a sniper, but I can hit zombies with it!
