Sorry, I commented before I saw your higher res images. BYF is Oberndorf, or the original Mauser factory in Southern Germany just to the east of the Black Forrest. It's a highly desirable factory.

It's alright, do you think I should buy it? I'd like a shooter with a little bit of German history but I'd also like to get a good deal.

byf 44 (Mauser Oberndorf 1944) is the most common K98k code/year.

Only you can decide if it is worth the money. It has issues, but it is hard to find any decent K98k much cheaper. If it is mostly going to be a shooter you should evaluate it like any other rifle: condition of the bore, condition of the metal under the wood, acceptable headspace, soundness of the stock (no cracks), etc.

        Revolvers are not pistols

pistol nouna handgun whose chamber is integral with the barrel
Calling a revolver a "pistol" is like calling a magazine a "clip", calling a shotgun a rifle, or a calling a man a woman.

OP it's a tough call to buy or not. If you just want a shooter then this rifle should work as long as the bore is in good condition. If you have a round of surplus 8mm stick the bullet into the muzzle and see how far it goes in. That will at least give you an idea of the bore wear. If it slips in to the case neck, it's worn out.

I think there has been more than enough hand holding here. Go buy it. Or don't.

Too bad you missed Reinhardt Heydrich's personal K98, which was auctioned on Gunbroker recently. Lots of German history in that one.

At that price, I would pass. The band thing is strange, but fixable, the rear sling is annoying.

Be patient, and watch the trader and arms list for a Russian Capture, or even a Yugo capture, if you can deal with scrubbed markings.

Speaking of Yugo capture, this looks interesting:

I think it is a little overpriced, but not horribly so. JG Sales had these last year for $280.

Bobby, that was the heavily Nazi embellzed one correct??

About $100-150 too high for my blood. You can find RU cap K98s for his asking price.

I feel bad for the OP because all he is going to get are the tired "back in my day" yarns where every sporting goods store had barrels of mint SS marked K98's for $9.99 which included a thousand rounds of ammo, free delivery, and a Hitler youth knife.

Between you and some of the more seasoned guys on here and gunboards i've had my own bouts of jealousy from stories and the old Shotgun News ads.

OP, id just do it to satisfy your thirst and buy another cheaper one if they come up as they tend to get snapped up FAST.

This is true Good deals get snatched quick. There are still gems and deals out there, but it can take some effort to find them and you have to have an accessible slush fund and refrain from hemming and hawing and limp noodled tirekickery.

Example: CMP M1 Carbines. Anyone who debated whether they needed one or tried to figure out how to fund one missed the boat for sure. By the time they reassure themselves enough to ask the wife for permission, they will have to resort to the secondary market gouge fest.

And inevitably if you spin the C&R roulette wheel enough times, you will get hosed on a piece of misrepresented crap. Dump it or part it out and move on to the next one

Agreed on all counts. My biggest problem is ill be funneling fun money away to snag something nice e.g. Persian Mauser.

Then 2-3 other C&Rs that aren't as high on my "to buy" list come up for great prices so naturally I pull the trigger on them. A few years back I didn't care as much for them but needless to say the C&R virus has taken over.
