m16a1 - as seen in previously posted photo
m16a2 - changed the rear sight, added chrome lining, added Forward assist, changed handguard to the more traditional looking clam shell from the triangular one.
m16a3 - changes from the a2 - detachable carry handle with 1913 rails for optics mounting
m16a4 - changes from the a3 - Knights arm. quad rail with KAC rail covers and KAC vert. foregrip and then ACOG on top.
feel free to add anything I may have left out.
But the OP was a clone of the m16a3 which may not seem like a huge difference but in reality it's a $1,600-$1,800 difference in price. Either way a great looking rifle and has inspired me to ditch all my mall ninja gear +1 billion to OPBut I being poor, have only my dreams. I have spread my dreams under your feet. Tread softely, because you tread on my dreams.Comment

ETA:
Looks like we are both kinda right. It appears that it is "possible" that some A3's have all the knick-knack paddy-whacks of the A4's
"More recently some M16A3s have been ordered along with larger batches of M16A4s, it is possible that these late production M16A3s share the detachable carrying handle and RAS of the M16A4"
The M16 (officially Rifle, Caliber 5.56 mm, M16) is the United States military designation of the AR-15. Originally designed at ArmaLite in the late 1950s, the AR-15 was officially adopted by the US Army in 1966 after having been improved by Colt. Since then, the design has undergone several major improvements, and remains in service with all branches of the US military to this day. The original M16 was a select-fire, 5.56×45mm rifle with a 20-round magazine. Mechanically, it is identical to...
So I suppose if your M16A4 fires full auto, then its actually an A3

First AR build
I have had an AR upper sitting in my safe for at least 10 years (don't ask me why!) It's a Bushmaster, with Carbine gas setup. Has 16 inch barrel, used longer handguard etc because I feel it handles better.
Got a Stag lower from Rifle Gear (great place). Looked at a few and found one that seemed to be a good fit. Installed a trigger set made by Bill Springfield, which is darned near perfect at 4-4.5 lbs, just the right amount of take up and almost no overtravel. (and a great deal, too).
Added Magpul forearm grip, which I find is more ergonomic and facilitates "natural" pointing of the rifle. Short rail on the front holds a DD offset flashlight mount and Surefire LED flashlight.
Bought an Eotech 512 from a CG member. Flip up sights front and rear. Can use the flip-ups through the window - they also match the dot perfectly. I was skeptical before about optical sights like this, but this thing has won me over. It's FAST. Mounted it close to the center of the rifle, as per the guys at Magpul Dynamics.
Took it to the range yesterday and sighted it in. Very accurate for a carbine.

Accessories have nothing to do with the nomenclature. This is how they come out of the box from FN
-KAC rail systems are seperately issued and attatched by unit armorers (they come with the foregrip and rail panels) Also, they are not universally issued, many A4s lack them, i.e. many A4s with M203 grenade launchers still have the old plastic slotted heat shield with leaf sight mounted on them.
-Optics (not just ACOGs, but m68s, EOtechs, etc), grenade launchers, IR lasers, BUIS are all seperately issued.Comment

Wow! Looks sweet.
Here's one of mine, pic quality sucks, just took it to sell the lower today and figured I might as well get some mileage out of it.
Didn't know about this thread, I think this is a more appropriate place to post it in. I accidentally, jacked THT's KISS thread.
My apologies to THT, I really dig your KISS concept.
Mods, you guys can delete the other one in THT's thread to avoid a dupe and any further thread jacking.
Any How its my KISSed-out RECCE Rifle.
Specs:
-Bushmaster Dissy Upper
-Stag-15 lower
-Sully Stock
-Ergo Grip
-DPMS LPK
-Magpul Trigger Guard & Ranger Plates
-NHMTG 10/20 Mags
