PTR-91... CA Legal ???????
Collapse

I just put a PTR in jail on Sat. that I ordered straight from Atlantic, and they installed the bullet button before it was shipped out.
I know they are out of PTR's but you might email them and ask to see if they have any BB's that they can sell you for one.
I just bought 10 mags for it yesterday for a total of $50. Kind of crazy considering you can barely find 1 ar mag for that.
Where did you get the mags from, I purchased a PTR last month and need mags now

You've been here for awhile, I'd expect you should have learned that almost NOTHING is CA DOJ approved.
The only thing that is/requires DOJ approval in CA are handguns (they need to be Rostered, unless they are exempt single action revolvers or single shot pistols or C&R).
Lack of approval does not mean illegality.
[Approval by DOJ has in fact resulted in illegality in certain cases, most notably the Walther P22 pistol fiasco that was approved for sale in CA even though it was an AW.]
We'd all be in jail now if maglock'd semiauto centerfire rifles with evil features like pistol grips, were illegal.
Calguns' Foundation AW litigation in Federal Court got AG Kamala Harris (and staff) to formally admit that AR15 rifles with BulletButtons [and 10rd or less mags] are legal in CA.

I would appreciate knowledgeable responses. Is a PTR-91 legal in
California? Some are for sale within CA, but some out of state sellers are freaking out - refusing to send them to CA. What is going on here? If I want to buy one out of state, am I OK in purchasing it and having it shipped here, or would it be intercepted or something - resulting in me paying for something I never get?
Thanks,
Stephanie
I purchased a PTR-91 back in 2011 from Brightspot Pawn.
You MIGHT need to have the muzzle device changed, but it WILL either need a bullet button or solar tactical grip wrap. I have a Solar Tactical on mine. The company also DOES make specific versions JUST for commiefornia on their website. If folks do not want to ship one here they they suck for not bothering to help you. If you go out of state and buy one, then make certain that it meets the minimum requirements, either have a bullet button on it or a solar tactical wrap. The bullet button is simple, it is just a tiny cover it seems. but the muzzle break might be a small hunt to find one that is CA legal (just because of the whole flashhider/brake/comp debate...). The nice thing about them is that they use G3/HK91 mags that are SUPER expensive.I recall that when I had bought my mags orignally I paid $3.00 each for the 20 rounders. BUT, that was also back in 1997-ISH. I forgot, I got them when I got my L1A1. (wrong mags). So I was stuck with them until 2010 when I discovered the PTR... You can prolly find the 20 round mags out of state for around $10-$15 each but you will need to convert them to 10 rounders to run in a fixed mag gun. Well, in CA you are not allowed to bring them in unless they are 10 rounders.

Need GOOD SS pins to clean your brass? Try the new and improved model...
And remember- 99.9% of the lawyers ruin it for the other .1%...Comment

Agree, just buy a new one from Atlantic. It's cheaper than buying used. PTR sellers seem to think shooting it adds $200 to its value.---------------------

We can install a mag lock for a customer or ship the gun with the pistol grip / trigger pack removed and shipped with the rifle as a featureless rifle.Comment

I can't recall what steel the barrel is but it isn't chrome lined. On the GI model, it's not match grade. I believe only the -F is match, the rest are standard profile with a larger chamber to accomodate any type of brass. There might be a slight decrease in accuracy, but when PTR first started making them they tried to go with match barrels in all their guns & got lots of complaints about misfeeds. They eventually went back to the original HK design. Personally, I prefer reliability over any potential gains in accuracy.
Corrosive can be shot through it, just be dilligent with your cleaning afterwards.
Also, the talk about PTRs destroying brass is greatly exaggerated. Yes it does ding them more than an AR would, so only about 70% of the brass is reloadable vs 99% from an AR. But hardly the total brass destruction that some talk about. The most difficult part for reloaders using PTRs is actually recovering the brass. They get ejected pretty far.---------------------
