Probably find some beat up set at thrift store.
OP was talking about wanting a short bag and disassembling his lower/upper, so I think golf bags (while discreet) will be too long.

Bought one of these a year ago for $24.00. I use it to carry my airsoft M4A1 replica with the 6 position stock fully extended. The barrel is 14.5 in long, so I'm sure a 16 or maybe even 18 in AR would fit with the stock retracted. You can fit a straight backed 20 rd mag in the rifle too, although I wouldn't recommend doing that with an OLL. Once I finish my Romy G build, I'll see if it will fit the same.

Gym bag with DIY foam padding and tie-down in yellow.. yeah my wife helped..
I guess it kind of stand out at the range, but the neighbor don't suspect a thing

A gym bag with a hockey or lacrosse stick poking out would pretty much disguise it...

I like my friends bag from out of state. Of course, it's a side-folding AK, but I bet you could sew in some Velcro straps just like in most bags and it would be an awesome concealed carry bag broken down.

How about a plastic tool box with wheels? You can break down your rifle, put other range essentials in it, lock it, wheel it to the car and wheel it to your shooting area.

Cheap, should hold up and might be the most convienent. I don't know how much attention it will get.
I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.

When I hit the lotto I'm only shooting factory.

I have a golf bag for my 1919A4.

                    It's pretty discrete.

                          got it

My friend bought it for me for X-mas. I would have chosen something else but she knows I have Larue products

Review: it's kinda flimsy and the Velcro setup doesn't support too well. Bag seems kind of cramped. I probably wouldn't recommend
