I'd go with a guitar case. For a while I used a Big yellow plastic toolbox and added foam padding to carry my rifle. Work very well and my neighbors had zero clue what was inside. Ended up giving to my brother because he moved into some apartments and needed more than I did.

that way the bad guys can break into your house to steal all your guitars!

i like the idea of a plain old duffel bag with the two halves wrapped up in a towel.
but i usually just sling the rifle over my shoulder and walk out to the pickup truck. rodeo towns are cool to live in.

yes very good deals on bags.

I recommend a cheap surplus duffle bag and put an Obama sticker on it.

I used an old bat bag for a trunk gun and a 72hr kit. No one thought twice about seeing it, and not as big a target for thieves as a guitar or key board.

I bought a Molle backpack made by Falcon. It has good padding and an adjustable top. It's not very discrete because of the Molle loops but it doesn't scream rifle like a 52" case would.

I haven't measured it but a 16" upper fits pretty well lengthwise. I'm sure a lower would fit in there too unless you had really tall optics and a VFG making the upper very bulky.

If your going to split the upper and lower you can use the appropriate size tool box. If you cut up some foam you can customize it for scopes, mags, lights...whatever. Awhile back there was a link on ar15.com You can even lock it if you want.

No foam inserts, but it is lined with molle and straps on the inside. I almost bought one but went with the Spike's bag. Here's a link to a thread about them, double tap guitar case, I believe Ryan has them for a bit cheaper now.

When willing to split the upper and lower, I've used a padded carrying case for my kid's scooter!

                              Would golf bags work?

Probably find some beat up set at thrift store.
'Cuz big holes are easier to see.
