Gun control is like trying to reduce drunk driving by making it tougher for sober people to own cars.

I would probably get the 17hmr.. ammo isn't that much, and you could hold quite a bit and not weigh you down. I wouldn't want to be stranded somewhere with less than a couple hundred rounds of ammo, preferably more. But then I guess that depends how long you could possibly be stranded for.

Anyway i dont want to spend more than $400
Should i just get a basic 22 for small game? or would i be better off with something larger caliber? thx for the info
AK 74 in .223 is the ultimate in my opinion if your talking 22LR
        the you can't beat a 10-22

Thx for all the great advice! i have a remington 870 i would have with me btw, so that may impact my choice on the rifle for survival situation as well, I'm caught between a 22 and a .223 ..... dont know what ill end up with, maybe both

I agree! Light, compact, and powerful enough for medium sized game, black bear protection.

Get the lightest, shortest .22-250 bolt-action you can find and add a 22lr adapter sleeve. You'll be able to take anything with it.

Otherwise, the Savage 22lr/20ga over/under is a great choice.

I have an M6 and LOVE it, but the 410 is underpowered for, say, deer. Keep in mind, the original M6 was a 22 Hornet/410, and the 22 Hornet is a lot peppier than 22lr.

If I was you, I would get a 22 magnum. Good for small game, and you can also take deer. Quiet, light and durable. Ammo doesn't weigh that much at all either. My friend and I used to hunt everything up to deer with our 22 mags.

How about a lightweight AR-15 build, and carry a .22LR conversion bolt and magazine along with the .223 stuff. Then you can use .22 for small game and swap bolts to have a proper battle rifle if you need it for self defense or taking down larger game.

a ar15 with a conversion kit would be another excellent choice.. but you will have to wait for birds to land for them

                    unless your a good shot.

+1, with a 22, you can carry hundreds of round without any weight and just carry less 20gauge shells for emergency like bears. You should have a few slugs for the 20gauge in case of bear. What ajax has is perfect for you. YOu cant just have a 22cal, becus of large predators! Otherwise a 22cal can kill anything with a properly placed shot. Just make sure you buy some stinger 22cal ammo. Good luck and that surely sounds fun to be out in the sierras. Dont forget to take a ultralight collapsable fishing pole

If you want a tool for getting small game in a survival situation buy or learn to make and set snares.

is this fantasy? Or are you preparing for the end of days? Or just going to hermit things for a while, be nice to run away up in the hills, but id miss beer, women, burgers, pizza, pho, buffets, warm bed, mma, internet and calguns. Id worry about fresh water supply first, especially if you plan to stay up there for long. Id find a heard of cows, and learn how to milk one, be careful which one u milk. My first choice would be a shotgun, and second a little marlin 22. A shotgun will cover everything, a 22 will also do it, lets admit it, 22s are pretty darn accurate, a lung or throat shot will take out the biggest of bucks, this is no longer sporting but survival, so throw humane practices out the window, so a throat shot, and follow that blood trail. A .22 will find its way to pigeons and squirrels up in trees, so u are covered. I advise to do this druing the summer, and not any time soon, unless you can melt properly when the spring or summer comes and continue breathing. If u do engage maybe you could keep us posted on things ie. smoke signals, maybe satelite internet. Might want to check out the survivor man episode where he spent a week up in the sierra nevadas too.

Ok I have seen on the for sale forum on here for $450, dont know if its still there but there was a Saiga in 5.56. Honestly nobody said it but that is a very reliable simple and not that heavy rifle that would go bang every time even if you dropped it in mud!. If you went with 7.62x39 the ammo is cheap!

There is also the option for around $400 to go with a lever action rifle like a 30-30. Sorry it is not what you posted abovd .22or.223 but just wanted to give you other options that nobody mentioned earlier. I have a marlin 336 in 30-30 and that is a great all around caliber and very reliable rifle. I had the stock slighly shortened and use peep sights. Its great!

What about a light weight rifle like (a used) Steyr/Mannlicher Pro Hunter in .223? Or a Kel-Tec?
