.410 slug at 35-40 yards should be able to drop a deer in it's tracks. Of course, many many years ago, I dropped a blacktail in it's tracks @ +/-125 yards with a single round of .22lr.NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor

A perfect setup IMHO:
I haven't looked, but I'm sure there are some C&R Savage 24s out there that could be SBR/SBS (Hmmm, would that be two tax stamps or one?) to about 12" with a folding stock. Thread the shotgun barrel for chokes - or maybe an adjustable polychoke. I would prefer a .22lr and 12g but 20g would work too.
For Non-NFA a Thompson/Center pistol-rifle combo (or maybe a shotgun barrel instead of rifle, but I don't know if that was covered by the SCOTUS decision/ATF rule making) - a 10-12" .22 pistol barrel and maybe a .243 rifle barrel (or 12g shotgun barrel if allowed).
Add a good/accurate revolver in .44mag or better, and you're all set.
If I'm trapped in the Sierras, I'm not going to be hunting game. I'm going to be flipping over ground cover and eating grubs, and setting traps for small game. The .22/.243/12g would be to either put down the game that is trapped, or to take targets of opportunity - ie squirrels that are too stupid to hide before I see them. And the .44/.243/12g for bears or mountain lions that I might upset (but I would REALLY try not to).
But it needs to be light and easy to use, especially if I'm suffering from the effects of exposure, hunger, and thirst.Comment
