With Muzzle-Braked Rifles, Are Ranges Going to Be Insufferable?

Damn, I was at an indoor range last week and the shooter in the next lane had a normally-tame, 9mm AR with a muzzle brake. I had on foam ear plugs underneath my Howard Leight electronic muffs. I worked my handgun through about 5 minutes of his muzzle-braked blasts and had to put it down and go outside for awhile...the lateral blasts were concussing me and shaking the dividers. I was getting a headache. Normally sheit doesn't bother me and I never complain.....

In researching many brakes, reviews say the bottom line is, if they work at all then they are loud and fire-breathing. Some very, very LOUD....and throw the lateral concussive gas 3-4 feet in each direction....e.g. SJC Titan, DPMS Miculek, Venom Defense, Precision Armament, and many other top brakes.

Seems at an outdoor range, we are going to be blasting our neighbor fairly violently all day long. Not only loud and concussive, these gases knock sheit over...and off tables, too.

Are there any good brakes....of course, non-flash hiding....that produce relatively low concussion? Or do you have to go with a thread protector if you want to be nice to your neighbor?

Otherwise, this may not go nicely....

not everyone will have brakes since some people will have RAWs and can run whatever they want.

only those who are featureless will be braked.

so if you are that worried, just be next to someone with a AW looking AR, not a featureless one.

I don't think the Range will be any better or worse. Honestly if your range allows shotguns it doesn't matter. I use double protection, Ear plugs and electric over ear headphones.

I could imagine if you were talking about 30-06 or 300Winmag at the range, But many long guns at that caliber run Brakes too.

I am hoping that there isn't a huge explosion (pun intended) of muzzle-braked AR's all over the place.

This is one of the reasons why I bought a linear compensator instead of a muzzle brake.

          Happy shooting and be safe.

            Agreed.

Also getting more crowded every year. All that land but only a few places to shoot on it ...at least where I go.

As for brakes, yeah, get that a lot nowadays. Tacticool mall ninjas need to tame the ball dropping recoil of the nasty 223 . Best thing to do is smile and find another lane or learn to like it

Yeah, I guess I could squat down next to RAW-equipped shooters....but then again, they may not like MY brake

                wont change much.

But if you want to change you, then install you a linear compensator. They are GREAT. seriously great. best kept secret, except I'd prefer if other people used them more.

You and XDJYo care to share any brand/models of linear comps that you have/like/dislike?

                      oh sure.

My favorite is probably considered a flash hider.

                      KIES makes my second favorite

There are designs that interest me, all I'm guessing illegal or legally thin due to suppressor laws

the Modular Ultra Low Concussion Shrouded Rifle Muzzle Brake looks really interesting, and the guy's brake designs are really good in general, so I'd be likely to trust this product.

indoor range with rifles = no fun for anyone.

I'm sure a lot of people will opt for the brake+flash diffuser combo, although I think it's silly as all get-out.

I shoot with several guys who run brakes, myself included, on a small private (outdoor) range and with hearing pro it's never been an issue.

The thing with brakes is that they use muzzle blast to negate recoil. Normally muzzle blast is directed forward. A brake uses a small opening to prevent excess gas from moving forward, and directs the gas/muzzle blase to the side and backwards, towards other shooters. The more effective the brake, the more muzzle blast for those around you.

I thought it would be really neat to make one of those for a pinned rifle, about 12" long. It would be a flash hider in my case, of course.
