So it just needs a new stock, a new trigger and a paint job out of the box, that's all.

Why does my 700 rust like a pig?!

I have a Remington 700 ADL and a Remington 700 SPS (not a tactical) and have no problems at all with rust. My ADL was drenched in a bad snow storm while it was being dragged out with some elk meat in a sled and no rust.Comment

It's the desert.
It has alkali which is every bit as toxic as acid.
You get desert dust on your hands (not sand, the fine dust in the air on windy days...and it's always windy in the desert) and then sweat, presto, liquid alkali.
Next trip to the desert take a PH tester of some sort and measure your hands after a hot day.
Until you neutralize the alkaloid it will continue to eat at any firearm, stainless or carbon steel
Oil and cleaning will not help.
Read up on PH/alkaloids/acids effects and cures.Comment

Kroil, Eezox, Brownell's Rust inhibitor, and Sentry Solutions Tuf Glide or Smooth Kote have worked effectively for me.
I like to strip off the wood and break down the gun, then apply the stuff liberally. I let it dry, at least for a day, then repeat that process. That should help. Keep the guns in a Bore Store.
Kroil is great stuff to have around. If I get a Rem SPS, or a parkerized gun, I rub the Kroil in for a few days, then follow that with Eezox, Brownell's, or Tuf Glide.
Rust makes me angry, too. Rust in a bore freaks me out."Self defense is not a fashion show. A defensive handgun is not a little black dress, or a purse."
Remember, the overwhelming majority of anti-gun thinkers are not stupid enough to be "afraid of guns." They are afraid of stupid/immature/crazy psycho people with guns.
And as always, being friendly, courteous, and respectful is the easiest way to bend people to your will.Comment

Ballistol.
It'll stay on the surface, actually creep into small areas, sit in porous surfaces, emulsifies with water (means the water won't displace the oil), and will help neutralize any acids on your hands. Ever since I started using it, I have had ZERO rust problems AND it's a great lube too.Originally posted by DRHI think Claire Wolf said it best as "America is at that awkward stage. It's too late to work within the system, but too early to shoot the bastards."Originally posted by KestryllSeriously??
Have you looked around?

Not a 700, but a remington. My 870 has been rusting like crazy since I got it. Surface rust is a serious issue. I got all the surface rust off and have since started wiping it down with a silicone cloth before putting it away.Comment

I haven't been too impressed with Remington's finish it SUCKS when there is any bit of moisture they have the worst rusting problems in the shop I work at. The Remington's stay "wet" with CLP because of their crappy finish.sadgive 'em the whole 9 yardsComment

The rough black oxided SPS finish sucks at rust prevention.
My SPS tactical rusted like crazy too.
I blasted and parkerized it and have no more rust problems...
