long range equipment questions

hey rick thanks for the pictures and advice. Im thinking perhaps bringing books of various heights to help level everything and get it where it needs to be with the caldwell bags. I meant to go last year but didnt wanna do it alone. Im stoked to go with a buddy this year.

If you are doing the Sat clinic, scrap the books and front bag. Buy a Harris SBRM with pod lock. You can also bring a small chunk of carpet or the like to keep the legs from digging into the gravel if you want. You want to use your time for shooting, not adjusting books.

Yes, that is almost certainly a 20 MOA base. The Vortex PST 6-24x50 has a zero stop, which is very helpful, IMO, since the turret revolutions are either only 5 Mil or 12 MOA. With a larger dial, I don't find it essential. It will probably run out of elevation and need to hold over if you are pushing your 26" .300WM to its limits, but you are fine at 1,000 yards. If you are happy with your trigger, it looks good to go, but you should get a bipod (choose wisely).

Other equipment that you should have for long range shooting (or shoot with buddies that collectively have):
-LRF (not a crappy $300 one)
-Kestrel 4500
-Chronograph
-Spotting scope

so I ended up buying a the harris sbrm and Im gonna make some sand bags of some sort just to have in case I decide I want them. will probably still buy the caldwell set up to help with sighting in at the range for my other rifles. the problem Ive found while practicing prone is I think I need to extend my length of pull. any suggestions besides the limbsaver pads? it seems my hs precision stock has a glued on butt pad so Im kinda sol from what Ive read. Im open to any and everything.

Why did you take it out of that pretty timber Bobby Hart stock? Did it have an aluminum chassis? I shoot past 1000y with mine.

I didnt that was the previous owners and it didnt come with the purchase. I intend to get a mcree chassis when the funds are available. but for now I need a fix to extend lop. it is a beautiful stock but for the price I paid I got a pretty good deal that stock woulda been a big bonus.

How much do you need? You could always cut off the current pad, get some spacers and new pad, and start over. May or may not be worth it to you, however.

I dont think that will be worth it to me in all honesty. I kinda like the idea of being able to use the limbsaver for prone and take it off for bench I was just curious if there were any other easy fixes out there I was unable to find. also not sure how much I need but I know Im craning my neck in prone and thats bad will lead to fatigue and bad shots.

Looks do not make for a comfortable stock. You really need to lay behind some and see what fits you best. The AICS does not fit me at all. I ran a B&C A2 which was ok. Then I ran a XLR chassis which is super adjustable and in theory should fit anybody. But I got tired of constantly tweaking it for shooting in different positions so I sold it and bought a McMillan A5. That thing fits me perfect in all positions even though the only adjustment is the cheek riser.

Other options being any other chassis/stock.

The McRee chassis starts at $410 and you would need to get a stock/buffer tube. Buffer is ~$30 and Stock will run ~$100 for a standard AR stock, $225+ for one with adjustable LOP/cheek weld. Add $54 for the chassis to not be raw and you're at $600 for a low end one. If you want their chassis with their buttstock, they run $635+.

If you like it, that's fine, I was just curious as to how you came to the decision on that one. Considering that's how much as new T4A/T5A/T6A costs, I would rethink it unless you can find one used for a good price.

Bingo! I met with Tom Manners one Saturday morning and tried out different stocks for close to an hour before settling on the T5A. It really helps.

I was planning on getting their full stock with the folding option it came out to about 750. I couldn't find anything with all those options around that price they were all 1k and up. Ill definitely check out the krg you mention. It looks like a viable option.

I know a few people that run Mcree and are content.

The only good advice, is to get behind the rifle with the chassis you're considering before buying.

Half the people that try AICS hate it. The other half LOVE it..... Gotta get behind one and try it before you buy.

As to the clinic..... If you're in gravel..... knee/elbow pads would be nice.... even with a shooting mat you might like that extra layer..

I got elbow pads from a motorcycle shop in the offroad section. They are a thin hard plastic shell with foam lining and adjustable stretch straps to slide right over your hand up your forearm into place. They were only about $20ish. I got them from "cycle gear" but I dont remember the brand name.
