I would vote for the Smith Ent. Good Iron Comp or the Vortex Flash Suppressor. Interesting on the ring comment above; have not experienced it on my GSR. I prefer to have less to no muzzle flash. Pick what you think will be effective for your use. YMMV. :-)

I really like the Smith Enterprise Good Iron muzzle brake.

I guess one nice thing about the Surefire compared to the Smith Enterprise is that the Surefire is shorter. Depends on what you feel is more important, OAL or performance.

Btw oppe4021, I see you have the 5-round ploymer magazine on your rifle. I like mine, they give the rifle a more streamlined profile compared to the factory 10-round steel box magazine.

You can't go wrong with either.

I agree, the 5 round polymer mags look the best. Function flawlessly too.

I'm not a fan of the factory 10 round steel mag so I sold it and bought more polymer mags.

Yeah, I always had issues with the first round feeding properly from the steel mag. What I noticed was if you seated the top round all the way back in the steel magazine and then inserted the magazine into the receiver, the rim of the top round would "hang up" on the magazine stop in the receiver and as such the bolt couldn't engage the first round consistently. At the range what I would have to resort to doing was reminding myself to seat the top round with about an 1/8" gap between the back of the round and the back of the steel magazine.

The polymer mags feed fine always because the back is thicker than the steel, thus the offset distance is accounted for.

Shop rifle parts (2,505) at Brownells, including barrels, stocks, triggers, and bolt carriers to customize, repair, or upgrade your rifle’s performance.

It's inexpensive and it's solid below 9 and 3 o'clock. Just a fancy thread protector with flash hiding capability and slight reduction in muzzle rise.

The GSR shoots so soft with its gummy bear butt pad, I don't see the need for a full-on, side-ported, muzzle brake. The blast isn't worth it for this application. If I wanted fast follow up shots from an auto-loader, or spot my own hits at 600 yards from a precision rig, I might want a brake for a .308. General purpose, bolt gun... not so much.
This is what I have on mine now too. Looks cool. And yes my old one did "ring like a tuning fork" when tapped. Does it work? Heck yea! My .308 Saiga threw big, huge fireballs on those really wet cloudy days. Not so much with the RGS, same lenght barrel and same ammo.

I think one of my primary deciding factors in this decision (besides cost) will be overall length. I don't really want to increase the length of the rifle too much over the stock OAL, so a compact muzzle brake is what I will be looking for. So probably a 1 or 2 chamber brake?

If you want a really compact brake, look no further than AAC. <- Click Link.

If you are still in the market for a scope, there is nothing wrong with a fixed 2 power or 4 power scope. That will suit you well out to 600 yards. The Luepold 2.5 works very nice. And just to touch on the combat accuracey comment mentioned earlier, I was easily able to group sub MOA with some Winchester Match Ammo at 100yards ssing the 2.5 optic. It's an accurate rifle. Boys and girls in the military qual with irons up to 300-500. It's not too hard with a little practice. A small aimpoint isn't a bad option either.

Thanks for the recommendation on that AAC brake, I had come across that model in my internet travels but was still browsing other options.

Regarding optics, I am still in the market for optics, and perhaps I had been a bit hasty on the "combat accuracy" comment. I don't doubt the GSR's ability to group nicely from a steady practiced hand. I think my stance was "this is a handy rifle and all it has to be is accurate enough." I meant no disrespect to the merits of the GSR for accurate bench shooting.

As an aside (being the original poster on this thread, and I hope I don't violate any forum rules with this) I am looking to sell the factory 10-round steel magazine that came with my rifle. I have a "Want To Sell" thread posted in the proper forum location. That is all.

No disrespect taken, but it's far more accurate than people give it credit for.

Just thought I'd bump this lil thread here... MadMech! Have any juicy updates? Hee!

I too have been "researching" muzzle brakes. Thanks, everyone! for the several links to the AAC shortie. I must've seen 40 different MB designs over the last few days... and that's the ticket for my RGS!

I pick up my carbine on Friday! The AAC Single Chamber is coming from Midway and is due to hit the porch next Wed.

                          Yeehaw.
