Ruger Scout Flash Suppressor

I agree with this statement. So on that note. Does anyone have any experience with the "Painkiller" Muzzle Brakes from APS Rifle?Just because a gun isn't kicking the crap out of you doesn't mean decreasing the felt recoil isn't worth pursuing. More time behind the trigger, less flinch, less battering of your face and shoulder, even in 308 is worth it.

This is their "3 port Painkiller" in both "Slim" and "Standard." Both are $200 (so definitely NOT 'nice' on the pocket book) but they remind me of the muzzle brake on the Barrett .50
Additionally I found the "M11 Severe Duty" from Rainier Arms:

At around $120 depending on where you buy it its less expensive than the APS Painkiller or the Surefire systems.
Neither one of these options are probably all that "neighbor friendly" at a shooting range but in terms of recoil compensation how do they perform?Comment

Yeah, I've got the standard black-barrel version which is 16.5 inches, the last thing I want to do is minimize barrel length and have some cop hassle me claiming "its too short."Comment

Did you try removing the flash suppressor and taping the barrel to make sure it is the flash suppressor and not the rifle harmonics?Hey everyone,
I tried searching the forum for this but I didn't see anything come up (so either I'm blind or it has not been covered yet).
I bought a Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle in January and absolutely love it. It is a handy rifle and I love the bolt action, but that's not what I'm posting about.
I recently discovered that the factory "bird cage" style flash suppressor is acting a bit like a tuning fork and has a tendency to produce a high pitch 'ring.' You can tell for sure by tapping the flash suppressor and listening for it. This 'ring' is rather annoying to me and my ears, so I would like to replace the flash suppressor.

I have a couple rifles that ring, and it is not because of the flash suppressor. It is caused by the harmonics of the over all rifle. And in some cases as the rifle loosens up the ringing will subside.
Best test, shoot it with the muzzle device on it, then remove it and shoot it again.
Other wise, there are a lot of flash suppressors out there and there are forums for scout rifles.sigpicC'mon man, shouldn't we ban Democracks from Cal-Guns? Or at least send them to re-education camps.Comment

here's the m11 brake on mine

and what you can expect to come out of it, depending on ammo

takes so much felt recoil off of it, it's basically been stolen by my girlfriend now

That's about the reaction I had. That is pretty!
However, I get the feeling that blast would get me kicked off the local ranges pretty quick.
So now for the question that I suspect I already know the answer to: Is there such a thing as a muzzle brake & flash suppressor?Comment

yeah, the sound blast to the side might be a bit much for some. but to me, you're at a gun range, it tends to get loud. I really only shoot outdoors now, so I don't worry about it too much. the flame came from some training ammo I had her try first. regular ammo isn't that dramatic.

Grizzly Muzzle Brake
Since Cali is getting funny about everything. I decided to get a muzzle brake (seems more useful anyway) and discard the factory flash hider. Cali doesn't like threaded barrels and I though the Grizzly would be the way to go if I had to pin the brake if necessary at a later date. But as you have said, since the scout rifles are bolt action, we are still legal. The Grizzly works beyond excellent, cut muzzle jump by 60%+. Follow up shots are easy as any slicing pie. $190.00
I also discarded the factory 10 round mag (too bulky - gets in the way) and went with a 10 round mag from Alpha Industries in Fullerton CA. They are about half the size as the factory, double stack 10rds and operate perfectly and don't wobble. I am waiting for them to come out with their 5 rounder which should be nice.
However, still contemplating on the scope set-up.

I discarded my 10-round factory steel mag for two reasons.
1) I didn't like how far below the trigger guard it extended (aesthetics)
2) I accidentally banged a sharp edge of the steel mag against the pretty laminate wood stock and nicked it.
After this I decided to buy two of Ruger 5-round Polymer magazines from MidwayUSA and have been VERY happy with them. They also seem to be easier to load and feed without issues.
I too am still contemplating my scope setup.
This is a good point actually as the two ranges I go to are outdoor ranges and one of them allows you to rent a Barrett .50 by the bullet (Rancho Cordova Shooting Center for those interested). At that point, you would think a little noise and muzzle flash from my humble .308 bolt gun would be acceptable. Still, I don't want to get booted off the range by some over zealous range master.yeah, the sound blast to the side might be a bit much for some. but to me, you're at a gun range, it tends to get loud.Comment

Have you ever seen anyone get booted for a loud comp? I never have.I discarded my 10-round factory steel mag for two reasons.

Mostly just dirty looks.
I've actually thought about getting this one to keep things short.

Heh, I've given plenty of dirty looks to the AR-15 guys spraying hot .223 casings onto my bench and into my lap without any thought or care (I've even had a couple hot casings go down my shirt). But no, to be fair I've never seen someone booted for having too loud a rifle.Have you ever seen anyone get booted for a loud comp? I never have.
