    Ruger Scout Flash Suppressor

    Hey everyone,

I tried searching the forum for this but I didn't see anything come up (so either I'm blind or it has not been covered yet).

I bought a Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle in January and absolutely love it. It is a handy rifle and I love the bolt action, but that's not what I'm posting about.

I recently discovered that the factory "bird cage" style flash suppressor is acting a bit like a tuning fork and has a tendency to produce a high pitch 'ring.' You can tell for sure by tapping the flash suppressor and listening for it. This 'ring' is rather annoying to me and my ears, so I would like to replace the flash suppressor.

Now, I am no tacti-cool junkie so I don't want to put on anything flamboyant, but I'm curious about what I can legally put on my rifle. The barrel has standard threads for flash suppressors/hiders.

Is it as simple as "it had one from the factory, so I can put whatever I want on" or do I have to be careful and find something (god forbid) "California Legal"?

Just to Cover My ***, I am talking about flash suppressors NOT silencers!

I was thinking about a brake as an option too.

I suspect the big thing I want to make sure of is that I avoid my rifle being mistaken as an assault weapon, BUT, being a bolt action I suspect it would be very difficult to classify it as an assault weapon. That being said any assault weapon law would not apply.

Alright, thank you for the prompt replies. Time to start pricing out options.

I put a Surefire Muzzle Brake on mine -- and my wife's -- brought the recoil sensation down to .223 levels -- love it --

This has become my Bug Out gun.

            That looks great.

Bug Out gun, that's a bonus for me as it will be my "bug out" gun as well. I bought mine primarily because, well, I wanted one ever since Ruger first announced them.

I bought some 5-round polymer mags recently and I've found they are much easier to load, they seem to feed better (I tended to get the first round hanging up with the factory 10-round steel) and I've found you can top-off the polymer mags without dropping them from the receiver.

By the way, which scope and bipod do you have on that Scout?

Also added XS rail that goes full length of top of receiver --

So you can put the scope anywhere

Ah, so many mod possibilities, so little funds.

Looks like I will have to do one mod at a time.

Thank you for the ideas and the pictures. These rifles look great almost any way people build them.

USMachinegun.com has pretty good prices , unless you need all brand names. They have brand name and their stuff too.

I went with Black River Tactical. It's a little more range friendly.

That is actually a good consideration to bring up. So far all my target shooting has been at regulated ranges so a muzzle brake or flash suppressor that is "range friendly" is a good idea.

It looks like those Black River Comps are also a bit easier on the pocket book than the Surefire systems are. However, is this a case of "you get what you pay for" in terms of quality and performance?

                          This is what I did...

                          $21.99

                          $3.00

Shop rifle parts (2,372) at Brownells, including barrels, stocks, triggers, and bolt carriers to customize, repair, or upgrade your rifle’s performance.

It's inexpensive and it's solid below 9 and 3 o'clock. Just a fancy thread protector with flash hiding capability and slight reduction in muzzle rise.

The GSR shoots so soft with its gummy bear butt pad, I don't see the need for a full-on, side-ported, muzzle brake. The blast isn't worth it for this application. If I wanted fast follow up shots from an auto-loader, or spot my own hits at 600 yards from a precision rig, I might want a brake for a .308. General purpose, bolt gun... not so much.

I would go the treaded cap route and leave it that way. IMO
