I like 7mm Remington Magnum, I find recoil to be fairly light and trajectory and energy is excellent across the range. If I want less recoil, I prefer 6.5mm, like 6.5 JDJ (14" barrel in Contender handgun) or 6.5x55 SE in M38 Swedish Mauser.

This is my Browning 1885 in 7mm Rem. Mag.

How does the price of the 1885 compare to the bar? Is it a single shot or are there a few rounds hidden in there? Beautiful rifle.

1885's are falling block single shots.

Sold mine because I have a .30-06 and a 300 WBY so it was really occupying no-mans land in my collection, that and it was a beautiful Ruger 77 Mark II and I am just generally a Remington 700 guy. That Ruger came with a 1/4" "pad" and a 24" barrel - I'm pretty sure it knocked a couple fillings out of my teeth. Not much fun for recreational shooting and I never got the kind of groups I get with my 700 so it went away.

My BIL has a Win 70 in 7mm mag and he shoots it well. But the last couple times we went shooting he grabbed his .30-06 I noticed.

My take, well I'm not a recoil complainer in general, if you want more stink you'll pay for it on the tail end... but jeeeeze that thing was pretty violent for an extra 150 fps over the -06. My Weatherby doesn't feel all that much more and you get a real difference in performance there.

If I was going to venture into a new hunting caliber right now, I'd go the 6.5x300 Weatherby, that's a mommajomma.
Buy made in USA whenever possible.

Browning makes some really beautiful rifles. From the little 22 that feeds thru the stock to the examples above. Truly where art meets function.

We had a calguns shooter CalShipBuilder use the 180 grain warner flatlines at 2054 yards this weekend with good results.
Try a box in your 30-06 and let us know how it shoots.

I'm going to order some 180 and some 161. Both will be fun in the 06. I have a Rem. 700 in 308 with a bull barrel I would like to try something around 150 in it if they have any. I will have to check overall length and if it will fit I'll try some of the 161s in the 308 also. Thanks everyone for the info.

I ordered a box ( 50 ) of the Warner Flatlines in 160 gr. They say the minimum twist rate is 1 / 11.5". The 180 and the 155 both require 1 / 10" so I have to check a few rifles and see what the twist is. There is no way I'm going to get a bullet that long in a 300 savage, but I can mess with the 30:06, 300wsm, and the 308. I like the 155 gr. but it is longer than the 160 and needs the 1 in 10 twist rate. I need to check some twists before going there. If you want a real heart attack, check out the custom made to your chamber loading dies. $600. to $750. each. More for the hardcore distance shooter than a guy playing around with basic hunting rifles. Should be interesting.

I paid $425 for a Warner Tool 300 wsm full length die 15 years ago and sent it back 2 weeks later.
Great die worked flawlessly but didnt fit my chamber at all after sending in my brass after shooting it 3 times.
I won a national title with that gun and a forster die so never bought anymore dies from warner but there bullets seem to shoot well

30:06 is over a hundred years old and still punching holes in a lot of targets and game. Just sayin

                                Greeting,
I've been shooting my 7mm Mauser in a Ruger Number 1 package for 20+ years now and love the ballistics. I shot a buddy's 7mm Rem Mag in a Remington 700 action and the round shoots like a laser. However, the recoil from the 7mm Remington Mag is not something I enjoyed. I bit too much for a full day at the bench.

Regarding the 280 Remington (7mm Remington Express for us older gentlemen) and the A.I. version, awesome rounds. Great ballistics.

                                Best regards,
                                870classic.
