Not a personal attack. You mean my joke about the 25 year Savage?

Or my random observations about 28 Nosler?

As for the 28 Nosler, yeah, it's spendy, but for the range benefits worth it to me.

I think I misunderstood the crappy piece of **** comment, wasn't sure if it was aimed at me or the rifle.

The 7mm Rem Mag was standardized from 4 wildcats in 1964 by Remington. Its great ! Mine is a Browning BAR and it delivers every time. Winchester 160 gr Ballistic Silvertips is my go to favorite round. But of course Kaw Lee Pforn Yuh wants you to use copper bullets, I am outa there now. No problem in Wyoming.

        Go for it, get one

BAR with BOSS is nice. Sadly, I've soured on belted magnums.

And, holy smokes does the BAR sling spent brass with authority! Be considerate of the folks in the next lane over.

Not to mention what that scope would cost. Like most people who have owned/shot rifles all their life as you get older you want to play around with some of the calibers you passed on earlier. I have enjoyed my 300 savage, 30:06s. .270s. 300 wsm, .308s, .556/223s and a few others. Who wouldn't love to find a nice older rifle in 25:06, .243 or 7mm just to enjoy it. I had a Browning 300wmag BAR that to me was one of the most beautiful well engineered rifles ever made. I lost it in a fire many years ago. To this day if I found another one like it I would replace it. I was mostly a .30 cal. guy so I'm catching up on some of the others.
Consider giving some Superformance a try in your .30-06, with 175-180gr bullets. I think you may be pleased with the results.

And if you're looking at chamberings you've passed on in the past, here are another few good ones you might want to consider.

                    1.) .270 Win
2.) 7mm-08 Rem (this is another one that I use)
                    3.) 7mm Mauser

And yep, there are plenty of other really cool ones, too; you mentioned the .25-06 and the .243 Win.

If I were you...I'd consider buying a Savage 110 action--if you don't already have one--and some additional barrels to go with it. With the standard 0.473" bolt face, you can have a lot of fun with new barrels and chamberings, and Savages are easily re-barreled at home, especially with the slotted barrel nut. E. R. Shaw makes affordable (and pretty decent!) re-barreling kits. Not match-grade, but very much good enough if you're either hunting game animals or not competing at high levels. And with new barrels with the same receiver, no more DROS and "waiting periods" to worry about. This is how I converted a spare Savage 11 from .308 Winchester to 7mm-08 Remington heavy barrel. Easy shootin', relatively low felt recoil, and plenty of fun at the range. A 110 action can do the same thing, with even more flexibility; it can go from, say, .30-06 to .243 Win, 7mm-08, 7mm Mauser, 8mm-06, etc.

Thanks, that does sound like fun. I have two .270s, A great deer hunting round. I have always liked the 7mm Mauser. Never messed with the 7mm-08. Is it much of an improvement over the .308. The .308 is a pretty respectable round in it's own right. I imagine the lighter bullet picks up some speed and a little less recoil.

Depends on what you're going for. You're right, the .308 Win is itself a fine round. The .308 Win will hit harder up to a certain range due to the heavier bullets that you can use in it. The 7mm-08 shoots a slightly smaller bullet, but will shoot somewhat flatter due to the 7mm aerodynamics. This is the same advantage (and disadvantage) that the excellent .270 Win, another flat shooter, gives, since you're familiar with that round.

Basically, the 7mm-08 is the 7mm Mauser that fits in a short action. It does so by operating at a somewhat higher pressure. Ballistically, they're just about twins.

I used to have a 7-08 and got rid of it when I realized there were no practical differences from a .308. Factory ammo is 140 gr in the 7mm-08, about 150 in the .308. I could feel no difference in recoil. You can put heavier and slower bullets in the .308, but 150 is pretty much optimum. Considering the cost and rarity of 7-08 ammo, I didn't miss it at all.

If you reload it might not make a lot of difference, but I didn't reload rifle when I had the 7-08.

This has really been a great thread. I have learned a lot. Lets keep it going. If i was going to go 7mm I think I would go 7mm Rem Mag. rather than the 7mm 08' I don't see any advantage in the smaller 7mm and there seems to be other options around that size. The .308 based round that has got me thinking is the.243. Being a 30:06 guy from an early age I also want to mess with the 25:06. I have 30:06s and .270s so it seems like a natural progression. Anyone with experience please describe what a 25:06 and .243 would be used for. They both sound like good deer rounds.

.243 is very popular around here because it has plenty of punch for the small deer here, and it shoots very flat, as well as having fairly light recoil. Kali could be very different for a couple reasons. I hear the blacktail in the northern part of the state get pretty big, like around 250 pounds. So if you're going after them, you have less margin for error with small caliber rounds. The other reason is you have to use non-lead bullets. I have no idea how well those work in a .243.

The other thing to consider when choosing a cartridge is whether it requires a long action or a short action. Long action cartridges are the .30-06 and anything derived from it, like the .270, .25-06, etc. Short action cartridges are .308 and anything derived from it. Those are just examples, obviously.

I agree. I am a 30-06 guy because that's the rifle my grandpa and father used.
I recently bought a.308 because I wanted a shorter and lighter rifle with smaller objective scope for ease of use in and out of stands, trucks , blinds, carrying around 5-6 hours a day whilst hunting. In regards to the question 25-06 vs .243 I have killed deer with both and both work well, however if you might hunt elk or you might have shots on deer at 200 yards or more consistently, I would say 25/06 is better due to heavier bullet and velocity advantage. if you are planning on hunting big game frequently or elk, pass on the 6mm/quarter bores and get a 7mm or .30 cal.
