7mm Rem. mag.

I have all the bolt actions I will ever need but for the last year I have had an urge to buy a 7mm magnum. I reload and have always thought this would be a good one to play around with. Any love left out there for this older work horse. I'm not a fan of the usually two inch longer barrel but it is on almost all of them. Might buy myself a X-mas present. What say the experts good and bad.

What would you use it for? A friend of mine has one and has blasted a couple three pretty good sized elk with it.

Never had one, but from what I hear, you get the most out of it by reloading, so you can make it headspace on the shoulder instead of the belt.

If you're going to get a magnum you're going to burn a lot of powder. If you're going to burn a lot of powder, you might as well burn it in the barrel instead of in front of it. If I were you I'd learn to love my extra 2 inches...

It's a great caliber for open country hunting for medium to medium- large game.

They aren't much fun to shoot for recreation and other calibers are better for long range target shooting. If you aren't going to hunt with it, I'd pick a different caliber.

The 7mm Remington Magnum is a great cartridge however, you may want to also seriously consider the .280 Ackley Improved. Think the latter would be getting my vote.

I've taken deer and elk with mine, brake makes it a pleasure to shoot.

I had to have one years ago. I got one and killed some animals with it. 140gr Nosler PAR bullets work great in them. So do the Swift bullets.

I rebarreled it to 264win mag and like it much more.

The 7mm mag is a very flat shooter and held records for years.

I had one I used for elk. I moved to a 300 win mag. Sold the rifle. In hindsight I should of rebarreled it for 300 and had trigger and bolt work done.
It’s a great round but it’s expensive if you want it for plinking. If it’s for hunting it’s not as popular as it once was imo. Now everyone is either precision rifle or the bigger is better Russian mentality.

Very comparable to a 30-06 in every way, other than it shoots a might flatter at a given distance. Its a wonderful cartridge. You'll shoot it like any other of your present rifles. Go buy it.

I have several 30:06s so don't need any more. Probably the best all round cartridge ever made. I was just looking for a new one to play around with. I have been reading alot about the .243 and it or a 25:06 would also be interesting.

If you handload, the 6mm Creedmoor or 25 Creedmoor are cartridges of the future. Not generally found in off-the-shelf general purpose rifles yet though.

7mm bullets are generally very aerodynamic in the 160-180 grain range with a huge selection of bullets. The 7mag is a great all-around cartridge in my opinion. I just like my .300 Win mag more.

You said that you reload and as this is CalGuns you most likely live in California?
The 151 Warner Flatline bullet has a 0.721 G1 BC and flies at the same velocity as your typical 140 class lead jacketed bullets.
You end up with a point blank range of 400 yards which is pretty tough to beat with most cartridges.
