site is, I've been wondering about our members tho

still a regular tab in my phone-puter so I stop by once or twice a day anxiously anticipating new posts

been a little chilly in these parts lately and days it warms up are a little mucky still while snow thaws so haven't been out.

I am rearranging and reorganizing my safes, adding some lighting, etc. so had to move everything out to temp hiding spot

few of the levers in this corner

Not lever-related, but....I just got my .257 Wthby Vanguard back from ER Shaw custom with a new 7.5" twist barrel. With the Weatherby freebore, I am anxious to try out the new long, heavy .257" bullets. I hope that these long bullets at a fairly high velocity will be great for long range shooting. I wonder if I can find any loads for those? Or will I have to (cautiously!) work up my own?

I’d make my own. Going to all the effort to have a qualified gunsmith fit a new barrel, chamber and headspace, trim to length, crown and possibly thread deserves the very best ammunition tailored for that one barrel.

I read his post as being that he was going to reload and his "I wonder if I can find any loads for those? Or will I have to (cautiously!) work up my own?" refers to load data.
If he "found a load for those", it would be published data, not a box of loaded ammo.
If he "worked up his own", it would be building his own load data by loading and test firing until his desired results are obtained.

I would add that a good alternate solution would be an internal ballistics program such as Quickload would help narrow it down to a couple good powder choices and to simulate good starting loads.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. Randall is right - I will load my own.

With the new BS law about "pre-cursor" parts, it seems you can no longer just order a barrel and have it shipped to you. You can send your serialized action and have a new barrel installed and have it returned directly to you. So long a the barrel is attached to a serialized receiver, it can be shipped without the hurdles imposed by the new law.

There is a C&R exemption for C&R licensees if the barrel could possibly fit a C&R gun.
Barrel blanks could certainly fall under this because a blank can be machined to fit almost any action assuming the blank is large enough at the breech.
Once you have the barrel blank in your hands, there's no requirement that you actually have it fitted to a C&R action.

I read his post as if he was looking to buy factory ammunition that might be suitable, and absent that, he would load his own.

Super handy information to know. Not that it will make most vendors be willing to ship, but for private transactions it might be useful. Appreciate it!

Here it is 3/18/2026 and we're still here. Sort of. Haven't seen Apples or golfish lately;me barely. Been thinking about the desert, but, its damn hot right now. We shall see.

howdy lever fans! spring thaw is happening here in the show-me state.

officially retired 3/1/2026 and working on plans for our private range out on the farm.

my buddies want a dueling tree, my son wants a caswell target retriever, I want a clay thrower... 😁

have to see what it will take to get power ran back to the woods edge, or just run the quiet portable genset near the range shack.

water too possibly, even kicking around the idea of septic if soil and grade is suitable, works great for the house so should back there too.

could even dual purpose for bougie deer blind! 😀

I was planning on going to the annual Tierra Del Sol Desert Safari in Borego this weekend. Lots of vendors, Jeepers and runs plus target shooting down by the railroad tracks.

107 to 111 degrees will keep me here at the beach where it's only 87 degrees. Seems desert season is over early this year.

I spent the morning hunting pheasant with a couple of friends out by Lancaster.
Hottest pheasant hunt I've ever been on.
Scenting conditions were pretty bad for the dogs
We contacted 18 of the 30 birds that were planted. We shot 17 of the 18. One hen hightailed it out of the field.
Every one hit birds, so it was a good day.
