What scatter gun do have there

It's a SKB 385, 2 barrel set (20 & 28 gauge).

I started off yesterday using the 28 gauge barrels, shooting a 5/8 oz, 1300 FPS load of steel #6.
I only got a couple of birds with that combination.

After getting tired of not hitting many birds (aka missing a lot) and , I switched over to using it with the 20 gauge barrels.
The 20 gauge shells were a 7/8 oz, 1400 FPS load of steel #6.
This combination worked much better for me

Typically, dove hunting is too hot for him (in my opinion) and as he's getting a little older, so I didn't take him.

As it turned out, even though it wasn't too hot out there, It's still on the warmer side for him.

It's hard not to take him hunting, he's got the heart and desire to do it, but he doesn't know when to quit, so I have to manage (limit) his time in the field more so now than when he was younger.

That being said, I'm thinking about taking him. I would probably half to shoot less birds, so that he can enjoy it without running himself into the ground.

I have two, one a Model 1936 that my Mom bought my Dad in 1941 (lots of venison in the freezers with that one) and my first deer hunting rifle (zero venison in the freezer from me). I also have a modern 336C I bought in the 90s. Both magnificent rifles.

That reminds me, I need to pull these from the safe and exercise them a bit.

Kerplow, can you be a little more specific about what it is you find substandard?

I had a Remlin that was horrendous, but stuck with it and whittled away at the problems. Now it's a great gun. That was my fifth Marlin at the time. I now own six.

I logged on to report that I have just joined the Mojave Desert Heritage & Cultural Association... something I had been wanting to do since I acquired a copy of Dennis Casebier's book, "Mojave Road Guide" awhile back.

The Road, as it is a 4WD recreational trail, stretches west from the river near Needles to Camp Cady, a few miles ENE of Barstow, stretching over 140 miles of off-highway travel.

The greater middle third passes through what is now The Mojave Preserve (no discharging of firearms unless hunting). The eastern-most and western-most portions of the Road traverse BLM land where one can camp and shoot.

One day in the not-too-distant future I plan to spend a week out there to drive portions of the road and then camp and shoot the remainder of the time.

Just starting to work on a new project. Winchester 1876 in 40-60. Parts availability is going to be an issue with this one. I have most of the small parts but the toggle links are missing. I may end up having to make a set from scratch, but really hoping to avoid that. This one is approximately 142 years old. Can’t wait to get it back into shootable condition.

I have Casebier's book sitting on my desk now. I have not driven the entire road, but many portions of it in my various hunting trips to the Preserve over the last 30 years or so. There is a lot of history there. The Rock House near Rock Spring is very cool and it has a restroom.....there are hundreds of square miles out there and the diversity is amazing if you see beyond "just desert." I have to get better tires and a bit of a lift before I get my new truck too far off the road. My old Ford F-350 4x4 was a beast, but the mileage with the V-10 in that heavy a truck was terrible. But it was like a piece of heavy equipment as far as capabilities were concerned.
