Dixon and Lodi are coming up if I can stand to be patient. I did get tired of Google search. lol I never actually thought about lever action in anything but .30 30. Now I have a whole another search perimeter.

Nostalgia? Win1894 and Sav1899 were only 5 years apart
It's not like one was introduced 100 years later
The '94's are neat, no doubt. The Sav 99 is just neater
IMHO of course.
Fortunately, there are dozens of brands and models of levers out there to fit all tastes, preferences, ergonomics, cartridges etc.

OP,
Apples makes a good point about considering the 357/38 lever. If you do not reload and must buy ammo over-the-counter, this is a great choice. You can purchase smoking hot 357 magnum down to powder puff 38 special Cowboy loads. 158 grain boolits down to 125 grain. Hunt pigs or plink steel. No problem. Have a Marlin in this caliber. Love it.Comment

This is why I typed: "Just an opinion here,...". I know the history of the '94 and '99's and such. Which one gets more attention here and seems to be more sought after? Thus, my answer. The '99 gives him another option, if he is so inclined.Nostalgia? Win1894 and Sav1899 were only 5 years apart

My Dad was a Marlin fan, didn't like the Winchester 94 for two reasons: 1) straight stock (he always liked pistol grip stocks) and 2) Marlins were side ejecting, Winchesters top ejecting.
The apple does not fall far from the tree and I have my Dad's old Marlin 1936 in the safe. Lots of family history here. I also bought a new Marlin 336 in the 90s as a modern equivalent. I have two other Marlins (one, 1894 in .45 Colt with a "straight" stock I want to convert to pistol grip), and a 39A.

I have a Marlin 30AW that I bought as new in the box with a sling. I think it's a base model that was sold at Walmart. I bought mine a number of years ago from a customer's Pawn Shop. I paid $175 and love the gun. I just don't get out and shoot it enough.Comment

After putting about 200 rounds through my new to me Marlin 336 30-30, I can tell you it quickly became my favorite gun. I can hit steel at 100 yards with the iron sights no problem, the action and trigger feel just right. The only issue I have had is that it sometimes does not want to feed all 6 rounds into the tube. I think mine still needs to be worked in.Originally posted by ibanezfooFallout isn't just a game, its for training.

But only because we have seen more Winchesters than Marlins in western- themed motion pictures. Even then, many should have been Model 1873s...The Marlin 336 is a great rifle but the 94 Winchester just looks more "old west".
Too, the 336 with its curved, palm swell/ pistol grip stock (save for the Texan carbines and their straight stocks) seems out of place... but when researchering this topic years ago I discovered that both buttstock styles are of equal age when first appearing on any repeating rifles.

True. Many (if not most) of the westerns (TV and film) are set in the late 1880s and they all seem to carry Winchester '92s which were not even available yet.
