The Winchester would certainly be my preference, I just haven't seen one in my price range yet. Thanks for the info!!
I'm going to go hit up my LGS and see what they have. Maybe both. lol

If you could find a nice Savage 99 in .30-30, you wouldn't be disappointed in the slightest bit, AND you can use the pointy boolits without cause.

They are the most beautiful and slickest handling lever ever made. The candidate would likely be C&R, can be found with neat furniture, and peeps/glass. Can be had in take down also. You'd have sumptin right there.

I'd have one in a heartbeat if I wasn't an SKS junkie. PAX

That's hilarious! My JC.Higgins is exactly the same. Stacks holes with 170gr at 75yds, can't hit the sky, pointed straight up with 150gr. Recoil is in the "adrenaline fun" range at 170gr.

If you read too deeply into all the innerwebb posting about what you should and shouldn't have,
then how are you expected to know when you are supposed to be having fun while shooting?

The Cowboy Action Shooting sport has actually found a modern use for all manner of
obsolete .30-.30 lever operated rifles all of kinds.

            Have to agree here.

I much prefer the handling, action, and rotary magazine of the Savage 99 to the "94"'s, especially Winchester. Winchester 94 looks like it's dumping its guts when you work the action.

I've seen Savage 99 in 30-30 out there; it's second on my list behind a 250-3000. Already have 300 Savage which is IMHO superior cartridge to 30-30.

I’ve seen a lot of really nice Winchester 1894 30-30’s at gun shows. If you’ve got one coming up, check there.
Shouldn't be too hard to find a good one. They made over seven million of 'em!

I have had (and shot) at one time or another A Marlin 336, a Winchester 94, Winchester 1894, and a Savage 1899 Saddle Ring Carbine in 30-30.
Unfortunately, I have never tried a Henry in 30-30 so I can not render an opinion on the Henry.

Of all of them, I much prefer the Savage 1899 in 30-30 Win.

                    Best regards,

I’m sporting some new bruises on my shoulder today after getting the 1950 Win’94 to the range yesterday. It was very surprising, not having shot a 30-30 in 35yrs or so.

Shooting off the bench is what did it, I guess because I was only using one hand on the rifle and had the fore-grip resting on sandbags. My off hand was under the butt.

Anyhow after I got the new sights beaten into submission and on target, the rest of my shots were taken while standing and they were pleasant. I suppose if you had a buttpad you’d never complain.

Just an opinion here, so easy. My guess is some people want a "Mod 94 in 30-30" because of a nostalgia deal. They just look "right". Might be better tooled lever rifles, but, a Mod 94, well heck, they're neat. There!

Taking one of my 336's out in the morning to see how it looks on paper. It'll get a red dot and be a pig and deer and wabbit gun.

Would a Savage with a 26" barrel have much ballistic advantage over a carbine in .30-30? PAX

That's a nice looking gun. I'm a big fan of the short rifle models
It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.
