    Had a Marlin 336

Really loved it. Sorry I sold it.

    Have a Savage 99 now in .308... it's a better cartridge but I miss the .30-30

I've got a Winchester and a stack of Marlins. For iron sights, I like the Win, just because. I have a red dot on one of the Marlin's and am taking it to Hawaii this spring for a deer hunt. Can't really go wrong with any of them!

Winchester first, Marlin second, because esthetics.

Marlin first, Winchester second, because the Marlin action is simpler and easier to disassemble for cleaning the bore from the breech.

            Take your pick.

              What Apples said.
I chose Marlin because of mechanics -- do my own smithing, shoot a lot, clean/maintain a lot.

But love the feel of the action of the Winchester.

Shoot the 30-30 before buying. You may be surprised by the recoil feel.

Look around for a good used one[any make]. The newer Marlin's still seem to have some manufacturing issues, but, they're coming along it seems.
The Henry's are damn nice, if you don't mind tube fed/gate fed. They are nice tho.

Yeah the recoil can be surprising. I like em all. My Win 94 has a very strong preference for the 170 grain bullets. With the 150s you're lucky to hit the barn....from the inside. With .170s it makes holes where you point it.

Are you after the cartridge or the style of rifle?

If you are more focused on the rifle, consider a Browning BLR in .243 or .270. The BLRs are fed from a removable box magazine which makes loading and unloading a breeze and allows browning to chamber pointed, aerodynamic cartridges. The trigger also moves with the lever, allowing for pinch free rapid followup shots.

The fit and finish of the BLRs is very good at the price point.

Jeeper brings up a good point. This .30-30 you're after? It won't be the last one. On the contrary; it will be a gateway drug...

The .30 WCF/.30-30 in a sub-7lb carbine is an effective instrument, but you won't necessarily enjoy practicing much with it unless you handload for cowboy target loads (mild compared to commercial loadings).

So we can suggest to you that your next lever carbine might be chambered in .357 Magnum, a "pistol" caliber (a straight-wall, revolver-caliber rimmed cartridge). .357 is a legitimate deer hunting cartridge. This is easily realized the first time you shoot the .357 lever carbine. Be warned however: you may want to shoot nothing else because it is the perfect blend of effective close-range small game gettin' and total shooting pleasure. There's very little recoil considering.

Me too, Marlin 30 AS .30-30, & Savage 99 .308, and also '94 saddle ring .30-30. I've also got a Stevens 325 .30-30 bolt gun that shoots the pointy boolits real good. PAX
