Congrats on the 700! I just got a new Ruger Precision Rifle and Viper PST 6-24x50 and haven't shot it yet. If you want to practice and compare together let me know.

The best riser I have found is $7 from ATI.
You sand the underside down to shorten it until its the correct height for your stock/rings.
It's not adjustable, but that's a good thing.
The adjustable ones generally come loose and move around or you can not get them back into the same place each time you loosen/tighten them.
The Kydex adjustable ones make the stock wider which pushes your face off to the side of the stock and complicates getting a proper cheekweld AND seeing through the scope properly.
Non-adjustable is more solid, never moves around, does not push you away from the stock and is cheaper to boot...

Mount it far enough back on the stock that your bolt will JUST barely come out of the action.
Otherwise, you just unscrew the two screws that hold it to the stock.

Ya, I wasn't concerned about getting the bolt out, but rather the cleaning rod.

Unbolting all the time seems like a issue for many types of stocks that one might try to add that to.

It's less of an issue than you think.
I pull the action out of the stock when I clean.
That lets you blow all the field crap out of the trigger and wipe some oil on the reciever below the stock line.

Like I said, it's less trouble than you think to remove two screws.

It's certainly not as convenient as loosening one screw and sliding my KMW cheekpiece out of my manners stock, but we are talking about a $9 solution, not a $150 solution.
The people looking at $9 solutions might be ok with removing two screws instead of loosening one to save $141.

Newbie Question - Wanting to get into Precision?

                          Good morning gentlemen - [emoji3]

Apologies for the late update. Has been extremely hectic at work the past several weeks. [emoji20]

Anyway, just to let you know that I have broken the rifle out from jail a couple of weeks back. It is indeed sweet!

Yesterday, I just purchased the bipod:

http://stores.versapod.com/150-052-v...od-rifle-rest/ (there was a Memorial Day 25% Off Sale)

That said, I know you guys have suggested some scopes; however, am looking at this (21% OFF + 10% OFF coupon = 29% OFF total):

Any thoughts? (Am really looking to shoot around 1,000-yards using the .308 Win)

                          Again, thanks for the advice!

                          Cheers,

Your not going to go wrong with that scope. Add a 20MOA base to the rifle and you'll have plenty of elevation in the scope to get you to 1,000 yards with .308.

                              Thanks for the kind words!

As an additional update, I took a basic sniper class a couple of weeks back, actually.

Since I didn't have a rifle, I rented one of the school's Remington 700. Seemingly a 30+ year old rifle that has been customized a bit and cared for. It has a Leupold 10x fixed scope.

First day, I was out to shooting 400-yards. When we did our cold bore shot the next morning - I was putting sub-MOA at 80-yards using ball ammo. By the end of the second day, I was hitting targets out to 990-yards.

I may be lucky (beginner's luck?) - but I find that 400~600-yards was a straightforward one-shot hit using ball. When we went to 800-yards using match ammo, elevation was spot on; but had to dial in windage. Got it in the second shot.

For the 990-yard target - got the elevation in 2-shots; but took about 3-shots due to the wind! At that distance, I'm really feeling the pinch with a 10x scope. And the 0.25MOA turret is NOT helping - TOO MUCH clicks!?!

Hi! Was wondering if you have a link to a recommended base?

During my sniper class, I was struggling with getting elevation with a 30L backup (rented gear). Thanks!

I've had a EGW aluminum base on my 700 since I got it in 2013. No problems with it at all.
