Installing a decent scope-what torque driver do you use?

I beleive in the right tool for the job, and am looking for that tool. I am puttin together my first attempt at a precision rifle, and wouod like to torque the rail and rings appropriately.

Midawy sells a kit with a driver and bits for about $50. Home depot sells a naked driver for about $60.

What do you use for scope installs, and where did you get it, please?

    Thanks.

Most people I know have a wheeler.

    I have one from work

You might be able to use a 1/4 torque wrench if it goes to down to your range

Don't be afraid of the harbor freight one. I have tested those are work and they easily hold accuracy +\- 10%.

My 1/2 drive even with abuse through 5000 plus cycles was still easily within spec

Match it to what ever the size and design the screw is. Torx, Slotted, Phillips, Star..... I don't think there is a 'right' tool. It's what you have in the tool box. There are slotted's that are designed to use and not damage the screw hole sides, but all the rest are good to go. If you don't have anything to fit wander over to Harbor Freight and pick up a set.

Go to Brownells. See what they have.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.

I bought a Wheeler set a few years ago. It came with everything to mount a scope/s. All packed in a nice case. It was a little pricey, but I like that I had everything in one place and didn't have to go look for different size bits. The Torque Wrench is like a big Screwdriver and clicks when you reach the setting you have chosen. I think it was around $100.

                I have the Wheeler "FAT".

No issues, but you have to have a pretty good grip to use it. I've got giant hands and even I have to work pretty hard.

I'd think a small ratchet style one might be easier to use?

Yes, you CAN fit a case of shotgun shells into a .50cal ammo can.

I think i found an optimal solution for ammo can labeling.

I made this target for the NRA's Marksman pistol test. I think it's a lot better than the paper plate they suggest.

I have a wheeler that I picked up from Sportsmens Warehouse for around $45.00. It has worked great for the scope mounting on my two precision rifles.

i purchased the vortex brand tool. it feels sturdy. my only reservations are that it only torques 10-50lbs and comes with only a few different attachments so i had to purchase a few more to fit my particular rings.

black friday will probably have them on sale somewhere. if i could have afforded it i probably would have preferred the Borka set.

I have the Wheeler Fat Wrench as well. Saw it one sale at Sportsmens Warehouse for $45 and just had to have it. Its a little bulky for field kit carry, but for use on the work bench its been great.

I have a Utica TS-35 but the torque values weren't high enough. and it was really tough setting up to max setting.

So i went with a Wheeler FAT

Another vote for the FAT. It's just simple to use and designed with guns/scopes in mind.

You can buy a much better USA made used torque screwdriver on eBay.
Look at Sturtevant Richmont or Utica.
Watch carefully as many are inch-ounce models instead of inch pound models.
The inch ounce models work fine, but you need to multiply inch pounds by 16 to get inch ounces.
Inch ounce models are generally more accurate.

                              Negligible price difference.
