Now on the flip side, you can buy a complete 700 long action for about $400, a Grayboe stock for $350, and a Remage barrel for $400. That's $150-$350 more than your factory rifle. If you want you can get a barrel blank and have it mounted/chambered for another $500. Your gaining so much for not that much more of a investment.

As for guys that think those of us who push custom rifles over factory are elitist, we're not. We're just people that would rather spend the money one time (or learn from their past like I did) and have the best tool for the job. Now if your one of these guys that *****es about how you can't afford a custom or spending another $400 or so because it's not in your budget or you can't afford it, remember that shooting isn't cheap and it's a luxury. Most of the guys I know with the most expensive rifles also drive 15yo cars, have flip phones, and buy all their clothes from Wal-Mart. They save elsewhere to be able to spend money on what they really want.
If you get the Remington 700 AWR you'd be gambling about $100 according to your figures. It's about $850 and comes with a Grayboe stock.

And a notoriously lawyer proof long throat and a factory barrel still. That's my point for $100 more why would you want to have a factory rifle vs a semi custom?

Well that would be the gamble. If it shoots as good as you want, you win $350+, if it doesn't you lose difference between $100 and whatever you can sell the factory barrel for.

Everyone is always saying those Remington 5R barrels are good. If long throat was the problem couldn't it be set back a little and redone?

It's still a skinny barrel though, somewhere around a #3 contour.
You would want to go to a #5 or #5-1/2 contour to ensure top accuracy.
That only adds about 1lb, but gives a significant improvement in the stiffness of the barrel.
There is no difference in the cost of the barrel contour during a rebarrel.

The extra 1lb would be better for recoil too. Just read people talking about light weight hunting rifle. Thought the 8lb Remington AWR was a good compromise over a 6 1/2 to 7lb rifle in 300 win mag. 9 or 10lb rifle wouldn't bother me at all especially in 300 win mag.

Remington has the weight listed lighter than reality on the AWR.

I think they list it that way because magnums usually weight 1/2 to 1 pound more than standard and weights vary depending on size hole in the barrels too. That's why they put 7 to 8 pounds

Im reading all this and listening.

Elk are tough to hunt. You might walk up a d down 3 or more big mountains. Then have to carry out the elk and heavy rifle.

If an elk is on the opposite side and the shot is 700yds i want a rifle that can do that.

I bought the Ruger American Magnum 300wm and I’m getting sub 1/2” groups with factory ammo. I don’t reload for 300wm. Paid $600 OTD. Can’t get a better hunting rifle than that. The factory 3rd single stack magazine is actually really nice, adjustable trigger is pretty good too.

The Remington Sendero in 300 win Mag shoot very well or atleast they did several years ago.
Most shooters will spend more on an out of the box rifle and suffer with less than stellar accuracy rather than buying a used rifle and putting a new barrel on it. It's just how people do things.

Most veteran shooters and competitive shooters will put a new barrel on just about any rifle they buy because barrels are consumables and they don't expect a rifle with a for sale sign on it to be a shooter.

There is a huge disconnect between what you should get and what you will get and that is just human nature but all the experienced shooters in a post tend to lean in the same direction while most new shooters will buy out of the box.
That's not a bad thing just what I have seen over 43 years of shooting.

Well the good news is that if you are capable of dropping an elk at 700 yards then you don't need any of our advice.
