Gotta love opinions stated as fact with no supporting arguments or details.

Mine does long range matches every month and lands mid-pack every time. They can be adequate target rifles but that's not why people usually buy them or what they're meant for. They buy them because they take 30 round mags which is almost always a terrible reason to buy a rifle.

With a new barrel, barrel nut, recoil lug and some stock bedding, like you'd do to a factory Savage or Remington if you were serious about competing with it, they're capable of being just as competitive as a Savage or Remington.

With regards to the MVP I see evidence that an action job and a new barrel, (same as you would do with a Remington) nets you a nicely shooting rifle for the money. I've never run one so I don't know how they feel but the flappy tongue doesn't inspire confidence, however uglier ideas have worked well so I dunno.

Moonbeam, can you tell us more about this? I'm not doubting you but leading the pack at a long range match with an MVP is a surprising thing. What's your setup like? NRA longrange, 3x1k or palma style?
weg: That device is obsolete now. They replaced it with wizards.
frank: Wait a minute. There are more than one wizard? Is [are?] the wizard calibrated?

I have a Mossberg, Remington and Ruger. All are great guns with little differences for each one. I may buy the CZ just so I have a nice round up of 223 bolts. The Mossberg shoots just as well as the others and for what you you get with the light weight chassie, bipod and Vortex scope, you cant beat the Mossberg. But the Ruger has a much smoother trigger.

You can really compare the bolt action on the Mossberg due to it being fed by an Ar mag and the bolt action is designed for just thst purpose. Any other bolt action will be much smoother.

See if anyone here has a CZ or Tikka and get that opinion as well.

My tikka 223 is butter smooth. I've held and played with the ruger American and it feels like it has sand in the action. On multiple occasions and various calibers
My cz 527 in 76239, the action is not as smooth but I think it's just cause it is new tight piece of machining and controlled feed.
The tikka is just so nice to shoot, Light, balanced, accurate, no recoil.
All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.

My MVP Varmint shoots well under 1" groups sometimes even some very tiny groups if I don't screw it up. With a budget scope, budget rings and budget stock.

The problem your probably seeing with MVP's is guys buying the Patrol 16" barrel and trying for the moon shot!

My remington 700 5r, 24" 9 twist shoots great with an aftermarket stock and trigger. It was a 1-1.5 MOA rifle with a Timney trigger and stock stock, but now with an XLR Evolution chassis, it is sub 0.75 MOA.

ADI 69 grain this weekend shot sub 0.7" inch groups, and AE 50gr Varmint (awesome ammo by the way) shot fantastic well.

Picked up an non ss ADL on sale at Sportsmans for $350 on Black Friday. Basically going to use it for a remage build. I also decided to put a SPS Tactical in 223 on 60 day since it wasn't that bad of a price. Picked up the 223 to mess around with since I'm getting rid of all my black rifles.

I think it is a 9 twist but that is all you need in a 223.
If you want to shoot bullets heavier than 65 grains a 243 is a better cartridge.

Everything is a trade off. Those Remingtons at $499 make excellent donor actions.

I'm pretty fond of my Coopers, but you would have to order a custom twist for the heavier bullets you want to shoot. My .223 puts 5 into a single ragged hole at 100 yards and ruins a lot of days for prairie poodles.

I'm really not trying to be a dick, so please don't take it that way. But get a smaller aiming point to shoot groups at. That way you see what it really can do.

With the lower power scopes most CalGunners use they would shoot smaller groups if they turned the target around so it is completely backwards.
You shoot one shot and then bracket that one shot by putting the bullet hole as close to the center edge of the crosshairs as possible while still being able to see the original bullet hole.
If you look at his target it looks like he was using the orange tape to do the same thing.
