What about overkill with the Savage 12 F/TR?

Not counting the little bit I did as a teenager some 50 years ago, I've been shooting for 6 months. Two months ago I started shooting a Tikka T3 varmint .223. Minute and a quarter all day and occasionally a half minute at 100yd. Other rifles may be as good but I don't see how any this side of $1000 could be much better.

^^^THIS^^^ any of the heavy barrel 527 are hard to best...
just be careful with scope selection / mounting issues with any
          caliber / model of 527

I had one of those. A guy can do a lot worse. It was a legit .6 shooter

I got a Savage because of barrel twist rates.

Gonna blast that mountain lion with it? Use heavy bullets. They can get basically the same size as a leopard.

I have a Savage 4x4 in .223 and it shoots great...but I put it in a Bell & Carlson stock. I have the afore-mentioned Savage, a CZ-527 in .223 and a couple Tikkas that out shoot any Howa/Vanguard I've owned (5 of them) I have heard good things about the Ruger American from my friends who also will only own accurate (MOA or less and preferably 1/2 MOA) rifles.

I'm not trying to put down anyone's Mossberg MVP, but they are not good target rifles. They just are not built to the same level as other rifles.

Can you go into more detail in your comparison with other rifles?

I just don't think they're as well made as other brands. Im sure they're fine for guys that want to plink and shoot steel with, but you don't see reports of them being sub MOA rifles. A heavy barrel Howa, Remington, or CZ would be a much better choice to me.

This guy didn't do too bad to 300yds with loads he said he just slapped together, but they were just three shot groups.
