First bolt action what scope should I buy?

Get a fixed x10 and the 700 police. The sps comes with a Hogue and is good for playing around, but I can tell you from experience, you won't get to 600 yards with the Hogue stock. It's to unpredictable.

Or get the sps and a take off stock that's better ($250-300).

I don't know why people are recommending a 24" barrel when your only shooting up to 600 yards. I have shot my sps tac 800 without much issue. 20" barrel is totally fine and your much better off spending more on the optic now and waiting on the barrel. You can't upgrade the scope itself so get good glass now.

Personally I'd spend an extra few hundred for the stainless 5R 24" version of the Rem 700, and then spend the $1K on a used SWFA 5-20x50mm

However, if 600 is as far as you're going to shoot, the 20" will be fine as well, but you might find yourself wanting a new stock.... which puts you close the the Stainless 5R price anyhow.

Oh, I should also mention the SWFA 5-20x50mm is vastly superior to the Viper in the glass department.

Haven't looked through an SHV FFP so can't comment on that.

Look for a Leupold Mark IV on Amazon. You can get a 4.5-14 x 50 in the neighborhood of $800-$1000. With that short of a barrel, you don't need a high-powered scope.

You ought to set up a can at 600 yards and look through a few different scopes. Small cans can be hard to see and may be obscured from a thicker FFP reticle. Thus, part of the question is what size cans are you shooting. Tuna cans would be much tougher than coffee cans.

Setup can make or break gear.
I've looked thru scopes where the ocular was never focused.
It can also be setup totally wrong for you.

Cheekweld on a 50mm + objective may need a cheekrest or high comb stock depending on base.
I'm a real stickler for setting up eye relief.
I like to drop down at full magnification and be right on. Dial back your magnification, if applicable, and make sure you have enough eye box.

Keep these things in mind when checking out other people gear.

I'm also a Leupold Mark 4 fan.
3.5-10x40mm works for me on an M14 platform rifle to 600yds.

I would take my time and buy a used vortex 3-18 gen II razor or a bushnell 3.5-21 ERS off SnipersHide.com As you get the long range bug you can slowly upgrade your rifle. The scope is a huge investment and personally where I would put the majority of my money.

700 5R; great rifle that'll long outshoot you that way you can spend a great deal learning to shoot with it.

Scope; Burris XTR are extremely hard to beat! Glass didn't look as good at a distance through a PST.

get the nightforce if you can afford it. Nothing wrong with the PST though, I just got a 2.5-10 and its feature packed. I cant say the glass is nearly as good as the one on my bushnell g2dmr though.

Also I'm going to agree with most the others and suggest you get the 5r. Its amazingly accurate out of the box. with a better shooter than me, its probably a consistent .5 moa without any work done to it. YMMV

Not to rain on the parade but you should put a good set of iron sights on it first. Get proficient with the irons first, and then go to the glass.
