And what barrel length would you recommend(target only)
Lapua brass, or Hornady. I like Lapua, I would go 24" barrel then.

Brass easy, bullets are even easier to find.

24" heavy profile barrel. Midway sells a 24" barrel and bolt combo from Stoner.

Lots of 6.5 bullets out there to pick from. Brass should also not be a problem.

The 6.5 Grendel is not a 1k round. Not enough case vcapacity for the bullet weight, is barely supersonic at 1,000yds.

I ran a necked-down, blown out AI-type 6mm based on the Grendel case (6mmARturbo40, wins for the longest named wildcat) for a season. Good numbers but not even equal to a 6BR and the brass was toast after 3 firings. Neat for an autoloader but not for a bolt gun.

The ideal length for a target barrel? As long as you can get it and still make the weight limit. Most are 28 to 32 inches, straight 1.25" or taper to 1". And yes, they are heavy. The PRS guys usually go a little shorter and a little thinner as their needs differ from BR, F-Class or ULR.

Yeah it's not a 1000 rounder for sure, really? So me blasting steel all day at 1000 isn't reality? Yes it turns subsonic past 1000... so does my 6.5 Creedmoor 300 yards past my Grendel.

Let's keep it in perspective, for the case size it's hard to beat the Grendel. Yes you can load it with smaller bullets to push the velocity for sure.

My Lazzeroni Warbird shoots the lights out of a 6 dasher, 6mm etc all with a 30 cal bullet... so.... as far as case capacity, shoot a lighter Bullet it has plenty of capacity

Brass is available, and factory ammo from Hornady with Amax or SST bullets is generally easy to find. I love mine.

Interesting thread. When I think large caliber, 375, 45, and 50 come to mind. I was surprised to see mentions of 30 and below.

                Wasn't 375H&H a very successful 1000+ yard cartridge for a long time?

                And the 45-110, 45-120, 50-90, 50-120, 50-140...

Or is that just a different"style" or class of long range shooting?

I've been binge watching this series. Excellent and good timing for me as I am also looking for a new caliber for 800+ yards long range bench shooting.

Have watched thru the first six. Part 3 is great as it logically narrows down the best calibers if you want low (moderate) recoil, long distance target shooting.

I can't remember which Calgunner, it might have been LynnJr or milotrain, said that the ELR cartridges shooting the high BC .338, .375, .408, .510 bullets have great ballistics but are very difficult to shoot tiny cloverleaf groups like you can with .224, .243, .264 caliber bullets.

Just remember, there is a huge difference in "800+ yards long range bench shooting." and long range field shooting…

His recommendations certainly are field focused, were a system could be used for hunting etc.. at all ranges and until the circular error of probability is larger than your target. Long range bench shooting or Bench Rest, the guns are generally setup for a narrow range of distances and often need a vehicle to get all the heavy gear to your FFP; of course this is not an issue for an established range.

The only reason for a 6.5 grenade is if you are limited to an AR-15.
How many short action 700's do you see chambered in 6.5 grenade?

The 300H&H won a bunch of matches in the 50s and 60s but I've never heard of the 375 H&H being used in serious target competitions.

Not meant for a bolt gun. Keeping it back to what it was designed for, an AR15 platform. It does extremely well.

If you go bolt gun, go 6.5 SAUM

I my self have 300winmag wich I use to hunt and target shoot... I just recently got into long range shooting (500+) and I figured I can use my caliber for long range application...
Is there is a thread on that please derect me to it..

Longest thickest barrel 2"x36". I shoot 338, 375, 408, 416, and 50. Scope, go Hensoldt. Bullets, go high end monolithic. Powder, H1000, Retumbo, RL-33, RL -50, 20N29, etc depending on case. The only con is the price tag if you are part of the working class.
