    Large caliber long range shooting

    Hello everyone!
I see everyone talking about shooting long range with .308, 3006, 6mm and so on... but I don't see much on calibers bigger than that...
I my self have 300winmag wich I use to hunt and target shoot... I just recently got into long range shooting (500+) and I figured I can use my caliber for long range application...
Is there is a thread on that please derect me to it..

If not I would like to know your set up...
    Caliber
    Scope
    Bullet
    Powder (if you reload)
And I guess pros and cons you may have ran into...
    Thanks for any info..

Your question is a bit vague and too general.

What kind of long range shooting do you want to do? Competition, Extreme Long Range (1200+ yards), tactical PRS style

Ok once I have a good understanding and practice I would like to try out competition, and for sake of this topic I would like to hit the 1000 mark.

Your opinion of long range shooting and needing a larger cartridge is typical of a new long range shooter. No disrespect meant, but it's a typical thought.

The reason we shoot the 308/30-06/6.5/6mm rounds is because practice make perfect. Even with a muzzle brake 300WM is a bear to shoot 50-100 rounds with. Plus your shooting still or paper, you don't need knock down power. 6.5 Creedmoor is very similar to 300WM ballistically.

I have two rifles for longer range shooting...

          20" 308 Win, Vortex Razor 5-20, Hornady 168gr Amax, H4895 (mild load)
Heavy setup, sitting in an AICS chassis, don't shoot it much past 800, solid 600 yard shooter. I enjoy shooting inside 600 with this a lot more and groups are wonderful 100-300 yards

          24" 243 Winchester, SWFA fixed 10x, 105gr Amax
While this really isn't a target rifle, it does a much better job at 1000 than my 308, so I use it anyways.

I really like 243, and will probably end up getting a RPR in 243 as my PRS rifle. I would prefer the 6.5 Creedmoor as well but would have wanted a longer barrel, and already have an investment into dies and bullets with 243 so I might just stick with that.

Ok very agreeable, the only reason I have it is because I use it for hunting large game.
And now just recently jumped into long range target shooting... first tough that came to mind was killing two birds with one stone.

Do you own only one wrench, one hammer? Different tools for different jobs. A hunting rifle and target rifle are the same way.

You hunting barrel profile 300wm wont do well for 20 shot strings in a 60 round match

                  Lol very true...
Well in my defense I'm starting a build on a 308 on a AR platform...
And I also have other caliber rifles
That will be another thread another day..

But I just wanted to see people opinions and setup on larger calibers

With today's rifles optics and ammo components a 300wm is kind of overkill for 1k yards and closer. There are many more effecient cartridges that will do the same thing as well or better than the 300wm.

If you want to shoot your magnum at 1k it can do a great job with by he right loads. However it's better suited for medium to big game hunting, or ranges further than 1k.

And just as a heads up before someone flames you crispy; we consider a 30 cal to be a medium caliber. Something more like a 338--50 cal is "big."

It would be wise to listen to NorCalFocus. A hunting rifle is typically not much of a target rifle. Likewise, a target rifle is typically not much of a hunting rifle. The killing two birds with one stone seems like a good idea... until you gain more experience. Then you shortly realize it's either good for only one of the tasks, or it's mediocre at both tasks.

I also save lots of money shooting .308 vs if I would have bought a .300 win mag. I also get to share ammo (or some reloading supplies) with the .308 bolt gun and .308 AR.

In the .30 caliber school I have:
                              .30-06 built for longrange
                              • Building a .308 for 800,900,1000 Palma (30" barrel, iron sights, 155 SMK or Lapua, Varget or 8208)

                              For past 1k
                              • .338 AI seems to be the new jam. I'm not really interested in that competition format.

                              Other 1k plans
                              • I have considered but will not likely build a 300 WSM.
                              • I have considered and may still build a 6mm Dasher.
                              • I have considered and may still build a .223 Palma rifle.
weg: That device is obsolete now. They replaced it with wizards.
frank: Wait a minute. There are more than one wizard? Is [are?] the wizard calibrated?
