Large caliber long range shooting

I my self have 300winmag wich I use to hunt and target shoot... I just recently got into long range shooting (500+) and I figured I can use my caliber for long range application...

Target shooting is generally accepted to be at paper or steel targets.
In 1000 yd competition, it's almost exclusively paper.
You could shoot a 107gr 6mm diameter bullet from a 243 or other smaller 6mm cartridge that would use about half the powder of your 300 mag, have less than 1/3 of the recoil of your 300 magnum and the 6mm bullet will drop less on the way to 1000yd targets and have less winds drift.
The 6mm will also have a longer barrel life before accuracy drops off from the barrel wearing out.

Why would anyone want to shoot a 300 magnum in competition?

I use the SMKs because I'm old and I've been shooting them for 35+ years.

I see everyone talking about shooting long range with .308, 3006, 6mm and so on... but I don't see much on calibers bigger than that...
I my self have 300winmag wich I use to hunt and target shoot... I just recently got into long range shooting (500+) and I figured I can use my caliber for long range application...
Is there is a thread on that please derect me to it..

If not I would like to know your set up...

Firstly, "some" long range hunting profiles make excellent target guns despite what people say. Case in point are Sendaro profiles used on a lot of long range systems. Or you'll need to deal with the offsets the heat might create, all of this can be mapped BTW.. just as CB offsets are.

Lynn Jr has a link on here were they shoot 2k+, but while doing so might be fun, it looks from your questions that you'll be skipping a ton of fundamentals and may be lead toward devices that may make any chance of hunting mute.

A 300WM and 300NM are right up there with the 338 with correct load, in some cases better.

Since you already have a 300 win mag you might as well take advantage of it.
The 190 grain Sierra MatchKing and a 300 win mag used to be a very popular combination so try that.
In our competitions which start at 2000 yards the 300 win mag has done well.
The guys using the 300 win mags are using Berger 215 and 230 grain OTM Hybrid bullets. They are also using The Warner Flatline Bullets which are incredibly flat shooting.
Hopefully Shaun Brady sees this thread and can give you some tips but the 198 flatline bullets got my attention.
The drawback is you need a scope base with a lot of cant to get on at 2000 yards and you don't at 1000 yards.

The 300WM is not my only caliber but was curious to hear people's thoughts...
... I can have multiple tools but I don't want to show up to my job with the wrong tool....

As others mentioned, you do have the rifle already. Yes it will shoot 1000 yards and if I were you I'd shoot it now because it's what you have. But if you really get serious (like it sounds you want to with comps and all) you'll want a dedicated target rifle.

What is the length-twist-brand of barrels you are using?

Long and heavy. 26" is my shortest "long range" 243ish barrel. I have a 16.5" but it's way too slow for anything mid range or further. My current project is a 28" bull 243 AI from criterion. But I have several setups to shoot different bullets. Some of them are for max velocity with lightweight varmint bullets, while others are for the heavies.

1:8" twist or 1:8.5" twist will let you shoot all the long skinny fancy long range bullets in the 105-108 grain range. Brands, there are lots of good ones. Brux, Bartlien, McGowen, Criterion, Pac Nor, Lilja, etc.

He has a long intro that you can skip but he does an amazing job explaining his logic and everything he knows with long range shooting

I think he might have a thing or two someone might do differently or have a different answer for, but that is GREAT idea. Of course, his slant on everything is field shooting and if your not interested in that application (hitting an object from close to ELR ranges with the same weapon system), it might not hold your interest.
