Just to be clear, threaded barrels are not illegal on semi auto rifles either. As long as your barrel is the minimum 16" with the muzzle device removed for both manual and semi auto rifles.

        True.

But the discussion is not regarding semiauto rifles. Considering the subforum...

The same can be said for pistols, in specific configurations.

The fate of the wounded rest in the hands of the ones who apply the first dressing.

Yes I know, but I was more wanting to point out that you still need a barrel length of 16".

I think you and I are on the same page.

Wow. I wish I could find the SOB who told me that all threaded barrels are illegal in CA. Thanks for the clarification man!

Ive got a Silencerco Specwar 7.62 muzzlebrake Ive been wanting to install on a bolt action (dont currently own one though) but I haven't been able to find anybody who threads barrels near me. Knowing I can just buy a rifle with a 5/8x24 threaded barrel is such a relief and knowing I can do that with either a semi or a bolt is just icing on the cake

            Appreciate the help guys

Where are you located? If your Randal AKA AR15 Barrels, he'll thread it up while you wait. Even if you have to drive a few hours its worth not having to hassle with shipping your gun and leaving it out of your possession.

Also for information like I posted above, read the flow chart.

I've decided to do the same thing OP. My choice will be 6.5CM. I decided that the best way for me to start out is to buy a Ruger RPR and a very good scope.

Later, if I like shooting long range I'll sell the Ruger RPR and buy a better rifle. I don't intend to compete, I just want to learn the basics of long range shooting first.

Problem with the RPR is that they only make a hand full each day so the wait is long.

EDIT: Threaded PISTOL barrels are illegal I believe.

sigpicC'mon man, shouldn't we ban Democracks from Cal-Guns? Or at least send them to re-education camps.

Anyone know a good place to buy a 700 barreled action? If I go that route I can get nice barrel and maybe stay within my $1500 dollars.

They have 15 of them (6.5) on gunbroker right now. Might cost you a few hundred over what you might pay local but you don't have to wait a year to get it.

If you go to Pacific Tool and Gage a Remington 700 short action is about $370 a Bartlien barrel is $350 plus Randall and a Jewell trigger is $200.
Throw it into a $325 medalist stock.

I had the absolute worst experience dealing with PTG for my action. They said 12 week max wait time, it took them 8 months.

Ok guys, now completely off topic. Threaded pistol barrels are NOT illegal in California.

If so, all those AR pistols out there would sure be illegal. They are not.

I suggest reading SB-23 and the 3 criteria which determines AW status for a pistol.

On topic: follow Lynn's advise and build a cheap 6.5 CM. You will get more bang for your buck than any off the shelf rifle.

You waited 8 months for a factory 700 from Pacific Tool?
I find that hard to believe.
A custom action yes a factory action I couldn't do that I would buy it elsewhere.

I live near Spartan Precision, going to send them an email today and see if they can build if I supply all the parts.

Looks like $455 according to their site.

"Remington 700 action truing includes truing the threads, face and bolt lug locking surfaces, the bolt face and lugs and aligning/enlarging the scope base holes from 6X48 to 8X40 – $125

Complete barrel job with threads hand fit to receiver, chambered to minimum SAAMI spec and a recessed target crown – $330"
