*Update* Custom 6.5 Creedmoor Build, Input Needed

    Hello CalGuns!

I've decided to get into the world of long ranger shooting and I believe that 6.5 Creedmoor is the caliber for me. I do not reload currently, I would like to shoot out to 1k yards, and I'm not going to hunt. I was originally looking at 300WM, but ruled it out after looking at the cost of factory ammo and reading about the felt recoil. Now comes the other difficult part of the decision, what will I use to throw these bullets down range!? Any input is appreciated, I have a $1500 budget for the rifle and have optics to use while saving for better optics

My number one choice right now:

Update: I'm going to go with a custom build, any input?

Here is a breakdown of the build

    Remington 700 Action --------------- $409.00

Bartlein Barrel, 6.5CM M24 (or med Palma) contour - $371.00

    PTG 700 Short bottom metal ------- $130.00

    Some 700 short action stock ----- $400.00

    Smith work ----------------------- $500.00

About $1,800 for the complete rifle before tax and DROS. I can deal with that

I am in the same boat, but I am torn between 308 and 6.5cm. I already have a AR10 that can reach out to 600 yards, that is what I have been told and read. So I am leaning towards a 308 because I do not want to start buying and storing 6.5 ammo. I was wondering if a bolt gun in 308 can reach out to 1000-1200 yards with a 22" barrel or should I just go with a creedmoor? I have been looking at GA precision, and it is a exspendsive sport.

SJ Mosin, factory 6.5's are few and far between. The Savage is good choice, for the weekend shooter. Really serious competitors will go with a Rem 700 or custom 700 cloned action.

Your other option in that price range is the new Ruger Precision Rifle.

1911man, 308 is fine out to 1000. Either go slow and steady with the 178 grain bullets or speedy with the 155 grains. If your building a long range bolt gun you'll want a 24"+ barrel not a 22".

Go for the Creedmoor. It's a no brainer if you want to shoot for distance. The Creedmoor will walk (run) away from the 308 past 700-800 yards.

GA Precision or Accurate Ordnance are good places to consider a rifle build. I've used both and I would go with AO if I did it all over again.

Sent from my phone, excuse the errors.

The fate of the wounded rest in the hands of the ones who apply the first dressing.

For a factory 6.5 under 1,500.00, it's hard to beat a 12LRP. The trigger takes some folks a little time to become comfortable with it as its set very light. I picked up one a few years ago just to have it in the collection and it's a great rifle for the price. Hornady match 140's are rather common for this caliber but they can be difficult to find on occasions.

I'm trying not to go the custom route because of the cost, I would like to be at $1500 for a complete rifle.

The savage you chose is a great option. The Ruger RPR (if you can find one) is another great option.

Dang this is tough! I'm going to be hiking with the rifle in National Forests and BLM land which makes me lean towards the RPR. I'm just not into the crazy tactical look of it.

why not the ruger american in 6.5 creedmoor then if you need to hike with it? I was under the assumption that this was going to be a target gun, which are not known to be light guns.

the savage12 lrp is 11 pounds naked, no optics. the ruger american is about 6-7 pounds. the rpr is about 10-11 pounds.

Doesn't the Ruger American have a threaded barrel? Can you just buy one at a LGS or do you need a middleman like Audiophil to make it CA compliant by spot welding the thread protector on?

(sorry Im new to bolt actions but Im very interested in the Ruger American)

Not illegal to have a threaded barrel on a bolt action.

A good example is the Remington AAC. Heck, all my bolt actions are threaded.

Weatherby Vanguqrd,Browning Xbolt,Ruger M77,and Savage all chamber a 6.5 Creedmoor.I believe only Weatherby and Ruger M77 come with a 24in barrel (but double check because I may be wrong).
