FYI, Bay Area folks, Metcalf does not allow you to shoot an AR pistol like you would a rifle (i.e. no shouldering). Ended up shooting mine off the sandbags.

This thread has peaked my interests.
Can I have the necessary parts shipped out to a dealer in Nevada/Vegas and then buy a lower from them out there, and have them assemble the upper/sled/etc together for me and ship it over to a FFL in CA so I can register it as a pistol? Does the dealer out in Nevada need to be a 07FFL to do all of this. Would this even make sense to do?Comment

I think you would have to buy the lower out of state anyhow. I had the same questions as you and looked into the build it yourself route but I read and learned all I could on this site about building it yourself and its darn near next to impossible without breaking laws. I ended up getting a Spike's lower (Pistol marked) and sending them my upper and they put it all together with bullet button / single shot mag and shipped it to CA. Finally got it after excruciating wait yesterday.Comment

Here's how it works to be able to DROS a complete AR-style pistol in CA. It is first converted to a single shot, for example, by locking in a single shot magazine. If the pistol has a barrel that is at least 6 inches long and an overall length of 10.5 inches and is single shot, it is exempt from the CA handgun roster and can be DROS'd. Once in your possesion, the magazine can be removed using whatever tool necessary and a bullet button put in place. Now as long as you don't do anything that makes illegal such a attaching a vertical forward grip, adding a stock or using a greater than 10 shot mag, you have a legal pistol. Since it's your pistol you can convert it to semi-auto as you please, and it doesn't fall under the law that prevents manufacturing weapons.
I know this as I have one at my FFL to be DROS'd as soon as I get back to CA from NC (tomorrow).

because in factory config, they are an illegal AW in CA. But they are available, you just have to find one that has been californicated before it comes into the state.Jack
Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

Here's my little SBP/PDW (Short Barrel Pistol)
Don't mind the schmutz, didn't get a chance to wipe off the extra CLP and that caused a little reflection off the flash.
