If buying a new "safe" roster gun - I'd go with a Dan Wesson Pointman 7. I believe these run about $1500 before tax and DROS. I prefer a series 70 firing system because I like the simplicity of the original 1911 design over the Series 80 or Swartz firing pin blocks.

If buying used with a $1500 budget I would recommend finding an old (from the 60's or 70's) Colt MKIV Series 70. Or if you want something with more enhancements like beaver tail and flare ejection port a Springfield TRP is also an excellent choice.

Maybe you can find a vintage 1911? Like a WW2 bring back? Now that would be very cool. Something with some history.

However, I do appreciate all the input about other quality guns out there. I always believe that for the most part, you get what you paid for. That doesn't mean that a $500 guns are junk and ugly. Also doesn't mean that a $3000 gun like that nighthawk I saw is better than any gun out there. I think you buy what you can afford and what makes you happy.
I suggest the Kimber Custom II. Its loaded with features you would ever need, cost around $730.00 NIB at BudsGunshop, a little bit more locally, they are also widely available in different flavors.

I am also of the mindset: not to buy more than you should. I like quality guns, but I also have other more pressing priorities in life.

          Good luck.

There's only one good choice with a $1500 budget. Although I'm a big Kimber fan...

            Springfield TRP for the win.

My take; If you have never owned a 1911 you might be better off getting one of the many great mid range pistols and spending the rest on ammo as the incremental difference in the higher cost pistols is minor. I have a few of the ones mentioned above inc the TRP and the Kimber. The mid range Sigs and Springfields are very good pistols...you might have a hard time finding a TRP for $1500 out the door in Ca...

                        I wanted a SA TRP.

Saw one at Ammo Bros in Ontario. Went home to think about it. Came back and it was gone.

I bought a Kimber Warrior II. I love it but I wish I had the TRP.

                        Get a TRP.

Tough decision between the TRP and the DW PM7.

Kind of, I personally would never buy a 1911 that didn't have FSC. I do not understand why anyone would want a smooth front strap?

I intentionally ordered my Les Baer with 20 LPI FSC just like the TRP's have. That sucker is never leaving my grip

Good question for John Moses Browning... But apparently, he liked smooth front straps.
