I go 1911 all day but I practice with that more. Whatever you're more comfortable with. It used to be a .357 but with a youngin getting more curious that had to go away.

It is pretty funny we're considering the gun being taken as evidence in this whole discussion. If I have to use that nightstand gun I want to know it works and is accurate, I'm not concerned with it being taken for evidence. It will be replaced with another if that is the case

I'm a 1911 fan boy, but I do have Glocks. It depends on what the threat condition is. More than likely if it's just those 2 as my choice it will be the Glock with loaded mag and empty chamber. Now if the threat is imminent then it's my Sig TTT and Kimber Pro II both in condition 1. That said I have my Sig P6 in condition 3 on standby, with a 12ga pump nearby.

My nightstand gun is a Glock 21SF. It has never malfunctioned with any JHP ammo. It goes bang even when it's been sitting there for months and not properly lubed.

At the range, I prefer my 1911s. You just can't beat that trigger.

I pick my GLOCK over my 1911. I shoot them equally, but the GLOCK has double the capacity and ballistics on 2 legged critters is a moot point using good ammo.

OP, that is my dilema too! I own both and can't make up my mind on which one to have on nightstand duty. Both are reliable and has rails. For me it comes down to the striker fire DA over the SA of the 1911, and mag capacity and the weight of the pistol was the deciding factor. I chose the Glock.

Glock but I would have no problem with the 1911 if that was my only choice.

I don't own any Glocks but I do think they are reliable, which to me is the #1 priority for a night stand gun. My problem is that I never practice with Glocks, and given my experience with the grip angle, it's likely I would shoot the ceiling in a stressful situation.

I do have several 1911s so I'd definitely choose one with a light rail that I feel is the most reliable. My Sig 1911 SSS, Kimber Warrior II, Dan Wesson Specialist have all been really reliable (although the Dan Wesson is new for me and I haven't put as many rounds through it) but I'd have no qualms going with any of them and I do like .45 for home defense.

That said, the gun I actually use for home defense is a Sig P227. It holds 2 more rounds than the 1911's in flush magazines, has been 100% reliable for me, and most importantly builds off my experience with Sig P-series guns. I learned to shoot on that platform and it's what I'm most comfortable with. I've put thousands and thousands of rounds down range across many different P226, P229 & P227 guns have have never experienced a failure of any kind. That's what I choose.

1911 - my EDC and my competition guns (idpa) are 1911 - I can clear any malfunction in the dark from muscle memory - I don't have to "think" what needs to happen - I just automatically do it. I can manipulate it easily from either hand and / or one handed. Took a great class where we learned to do everything one handed - including weak hand in case strong hand gets taken out in a fight



So - 1911 because I know it and can use it without fumbling.

PS - the bigger question is - do YOU practice with your bedside gun? How do you know it will function when needed?

I already have problems sleeping at nights. The idea of having a rock island armory 1911 on my nightstand, I'll never get any sleep.

Lmao! I've heard reasonably good things of rocky island but to be honest when I hear nonsense such as "1911s are not reliable"... I think of a 300$ rock island

I have neither I would grab my USP Expert in 45, it has been very reliable, has a very good trigger (not 1911 but still very good) and DA/SA, so it has 11 rounds.
