M&P9 PRO & C.O.R.E Information and Question Thread!

REVISED THIS THREAD NAME SO I CAN CONTINUE WITH QUESTIONS AND INFORMATION ABOUT THE M&P9 PRO and CORE LINE.

JUST BOUGHT MY M&P9 Pro C.O.R.E 5" Long Slide Today!!!!!

    6-24-14

Original Question Below .... (revised information starting at Post #63)

Are there any M&P9 Pro Series handguns approved for CA purchase? (if not can our local gun shops get these and do the single shot exemption deal or no because of the round restriction etc?)

I was thinking about how much I would be using this for target practice and hopefully more tactical target shooting in the future if I could find a place to do that and the Pro Series seems to be better option for that purpose. It will still be a HD gun as well but I think even though it's 3/4" longer that will still be fine really.

Is this Pro really worth the extra premium? ... Plus how about the C.O.R.E., is there a real benefit there as well (other then optics-ready)? Or is the standard M&P9 better with just a couple upgrades?

But I do not see a 10+1 round M&P int he Pro Series at all leading me to believe the only option is the basic 4.25" 9 and not the 5" pro series.

    And on a side not I see 4 listings for 10+1 standard M&P9's (109201/301 & 109251/351).
What are the differences in these 4 models does anyone know? Curious what I should be asking for if these are all CA approved and they differ somehow.

Or should I just stick with the standard series and at some point do this Apex trigger kit and RAM that many say are a HUGE upgrade? Will I notice the loss in the 3/4" though? Just wanting to make sure my first handgun purchase is the right one.

Thanks so much for the info ... from the looks of thing I may be getting this late next month so I'm preparing and gathering data to make sure I make the correct purchase.

If you want a M&P 9 series firearm now, I suggest you do it now before it is off the list 8/16/2014. Smith and Wesson has pulled all of their semiautomatic handguns off the approved CA Doj list except the M&P Shield. The Core and Pro Series cannot be sold in California. Don't wait to long, start checking with you local FFL dealers ASAP!

All the extra Apex parts, I would dry fire the handgun with a snap caps approximately 1000 times first, shot it and see if I like them.

    Good luck!

Another thing to note. If you purchase a standard new M&P, the trigger of of the box has incredible reset. No need for the RAM from Apex. The old model had horrible tactile/audible feedback but the newest model feels like a new gun.

That being said I just recently purchased a standard M&P 9mm and absolutely love it. Also have a set of 10-8 sights coming

        Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

Wrong. The Core and Pro series CAN be sold in CA. You just need an FFL that will SSE one for you. My FFL sells them all the time.

OP, it is true that they don't make a 10rd version, so if you decide to SSE one, see if your FFL can block the mags to 10rds. Otherwise, you'll just have to buy 10rd mags for it.

Were the new sear, trigger bar and slide lock were on your M&P9? Where did you get it?

I bought mine last year and everyone claimed it would have the new parts. It did not.

The 4 m&p models listed as 10+1 I believe are Massachusetts and California models with and without the thumb safety. The Massachusetts models have a ten pound pull so they make the stock trigger even worse. In my opinion the pro is totally worth it because of the longer barrel, fiber sights, and slightly better trigger. Keep in mind that the apex trigger set up is still an upgrade. The core is only worth it if you want to add a rmr style sight. The core back grips are nice but not for the $100 difference in price IMO. Many shops SSE and due to an impending ban you may want to get it ASAP. I purchased a 5" pro 40 from Tracy Rifle and Pistol for about 750 out the door, they're a great shop.

I don't want to spread FUD. While it seems highly likely that they'll ban SSE so they can finally close the loophole on the safety roster, it's not for certain.

                  ^ This

I bought the CORE 9 for myself and the regular full size 9 for my wife earlier this year (via SSE). Upgraded both with the FSS trigger after a month. Upgraded my the sights on the FS (10-8 rear 'notch', Trijicon front). Unless you want to mount an optic no need for the CORE.

So the CORE I will pass on from the sounds of it based on my needs.

But the Pro Series still sounds like an option due the main gun shop I purchase from will do the SSE.

The regular runs $550 .... How much more is the Pro? Plus I guess I would need to factor in the cost of a couple 10 rd magazines as well?

Also out of those 4 regular model M&P's are the CA and which are the MA.? If I do go that route I want to make sure I don't get the crappier MA model with worse trigger pull.

                    Thanks guys.

Hit up PRK in Fresno, they sell it and can sse you. Pricing would be around 700ish.

This. They are readily available to bring in SSE. I recently brought a 9L CORE in through Digital Instincts if you're ever in the Bay Area. There is a sticky above that can aid you.

Only the 109201 is CA Compliant (for the moment). It has the mag safety. If you SSE something will unlikely be an MA model. However, you should check the SKUs against the S&W site.

The M&P Pro Series has a lighter trigger but unfortunately it does not have the pronounced reset like the newer regular M&Ps. The 5 inch barrel is nice for target shooting but I find the 4.25 inch barrel is quicker on target. I like the regular M&P since they fixed all the issues like the trigger reset and barrel twist. Get the regular M&P and if you want a smoother, lighter trigger get the APEX upgrades. No need for the RAM. I like the stock set up and just dry fired the heck out of it to smooth out the trigger.

When I ordered our non-CA M&Ps online the online retailer asked me if they should send the non-CA mags to my FFL. My FFL will block mags to 10 rounds if the purchaser provides the mag blockers that have been purchased from a commercial company (not DIY blockers). He provided the URL, I order the blockers and we're picking up our non-CA M&Ps. on Tuesday with blocked mags. SSE has been pain free.

Only thing I have to do is remove the mag disconnect from our current M&Ps to eliminate any operation difference among the four handguns
