10mm anything I should know.

So I just put a G20 on layaway (you guys sold me on one) and I just wanted to know before i go pick it up, is there anything about the 10 that i need to know about? I did some research but came up inconclusive due to the fact that I have gotten numerous different answers on the web. Is the 10 really on par with the .357 mag or is it on par with a lower caliber like the .45acp?

The 357 mag at the highest levels can throw a 200gr solid as well but it is only .357 wide! Check out federals new trophy bonded 10mm. That is an awesome hunting and personal defense bullet. Expensive but really good. For everyday shooting use underwood 200gr tmj for full power or armscor or ppu for plinking.

The drawback to the 10mm is other than the new federal JSP bonded no hollowpoints are made for its top power levels. Even the 180gr xtp and gold dot and 200gr xtp open up more than I would like at speeds north of 1275fps (180) and 1200fps (200gr). It is a great round but for personal defense the 10 isnt going to get you anything better than a 180gr 40cal hst out of that same length barrel is going to give you. The difference is the 10mm will still hit that hog at 50 yards harder than the 40 would ar the muzzle.

They're all different.

Are you talking barrier penetration, normal penetration, expansion, temporary/permanent cavities, hydrostatic shock?

Also which round/bullet and what loading are you referring to?

As far as I know the real 10mm loads (underwood, etc) will eclipse the .357 mag.

The 10 can throw heavier bullets at greater than or equal to speeds as the 357.

The best thing about the 10mm is that it's a very versatile caliber, much like .357 mag is. You can shoot anything from a 135gr bullet at 1600fps to a 200gr bullet at 1200fps. Velocities are also quite similar to .357 mag with equivalent bullet weights. If you need better performance out of your G20, a longer barrel can add roughly 50-100fps per extra inch.

Proper 10mm ammo is more powerful than any .45acp +P load, and comparable to .45 Super.

By numbers, its a lot like a 357mag, but with a bigger hole.

One huge advantage to 10mm over 357 is that you can get affordable and reliable semi autos in 10. 10 just flat out wins there.

Its a cannon compared to 45acp.

I'd like to have a 10mm just to have a 10mm. I wonder if 10mm would stop a bear?

^^ I've seen that. I am weird, I love recoil. So i hope the 10mm has some good recoil to it. Ive heard the 200 grain has recoil equivalent to a 44mag so we will see

10mm definitely takes down chupacabra and bigfoot in 1 shot.

My favorite hardcast is the doubletap 200gr wfngc it has always gone bang for me and chambers everytime. They go plenty fast for what we need and any more a 6" barrel will fix that. For self defense ill carry the critical duty 10mm, the federal jsp, or maybe the hornady custom 180gr 10mm factory load. The prob is hornady doesnt think we are as worthy as police and does not seal their non duty or TAP rounds at the case mouth or primer.

its all in the balance of the gun.... in a g20 the recoil is very noticeable but controlled.... all the 10- 1911's i have shot are sharp recoil and very different.

Unless you go with a specialty manufacture like Buffalo Bore you will be a little disappointed in the 10mm.

All the stuff being loaded and sold by the big name brands are little more than a 40S&W +P

You need to reload to really get the most out of the round. At the very least, save your brass. Brass brass is best, nickel plated will split after a few reloads.

Now get some spare barrels in 40(not really, it shoots 40 fine as is), 357 Sig, 9X25Dillon, 10mm aftermarket(for lead bullets) and the six inch factory barrel as well. 4 different calibers, same magazine.
