Time for a high end 1911... Help

NHC are tighter and feel more hand worked than Wilson CQBs. Wilson has better customer service. I have both. The grip safty, slide to frame fit, barrel lockup, and trigger of the NHC is a step or two above the CQB's. It just is.

My les baer is on a league of it's own in terms of bang for the buck. I truly believe you get more than what you pay for with a baer. The trade off is poor customoer service and some cast parts.

My evergoing 1911 hunt was over once I got my SVI single stack in .45 (I also have a conversion to .40). SVI guns go 100K+ rounds and keep going. they are built just to do so. Here is a pic of mine

You need to check the LTW gun forum if you haven't yet.

Builds from CT Brian, Chen, Rogers and some only mentioned like Jardine or Jim Milks and Harp Customs.

Prices on some of these guys can get way into the five figure area but some of the slightly younger ones might be in your price range.

My vote is for the Wilson CQB, I own one and think it is the best.

High end can mean name, quality, or a balance between both.

I recommend looking at a few samples of the semi-custom makers like Ed Brown, Wilson Combat, etc. and also compare them to a few named gunsmiths' work.

Cosmetic things (and this is just a sample) I look for when I evaluate the build quality of a 1911 are:

-Slide to frame fit: it doesn't have to be Les Baer tight, but it can't rattle

-Bushing/barrel fit: I shouldn't be able to remove it without a wrench

-Grip safety fit: should look one piece other than the hairline between the grip safety and the frame

-Straight and aligned lines on the checkering: pretty self explanatory. But as an example, Les Baer checkering = generally crooked and overrun. Wilson Combat = straighter.

-Magazine well should be well blended and smooth to the touch


Functionally...well that really depends on you. I can hand you a silky smooth and soft trigger, but you might complain that it's not crisp. My thumb safety snaps into place, but you might like it softer.


All that said, no name recognition = no resale value. And no name recognition = no prestige. And that's all I have to say about that...
