Still doesn't excuse not putting one more in it's skull to seal the deal. Highly unlikely the moose died immediately. Also, a true Alaskan would probably have never wasted the meat.

How exactly would you have done it?

Seems a five foot tall moose and him had a standoff, the moose bluffed once, then again charged and kicked him (which has killed more than a few people), and he even didn't shoot it until it came back again.

      Seems fair enough.

Not sure why he didn't stop to finish the moose, but I expect from the way it dropped it wasn't long for this world.
I imagine the guy was pretty sketched out after just having a moose in his grill a few seconds before, and that is why he may have scrammed.
Who knows, he may have come back soon after.
This is a case where an actual warning shot may have scared it away. The sound of the gun firing in the cold air might have scared it away.

We don't really know what we'd do in that situation. I HOPE that I would fire a warning shot before taking lethal action. I hope I would be able to just turn the sled around and take another route. And if worse came to worse, I would hope I would be man enough to finish it off quickly and humanely.

The video made this guy look like a gun crazy d-bag.

We've been over this before. That moose is dead, or seconds away from death when he pulls by it. Large game generally don't drop, legs stiff in the air when they have just been wounded.

          .
The higher quality video from liveleak was posted a while back and it seems pretty clear the first shot was deliberately high and left.

Unless there is a longer video out there somewhere, how do we know what he did 5 minutes later than that. You do realize that a scared or injured animal will stop and play possum right. After a moose already coming at you once, would you not take a minute to head the other direction and regain your senses? I wouldn't try and finish off a wounded animal only to have it attack me again before I could get a shot off. You've gotta have some common sense here.

I've hunted and handled guns for 38 years and I know first hand that it takes seconds to put one more bullet in the head. Watch the video, the only thing the moose was playing was wounded, not possum. Common sense tells me to finish him off. Go ahead and defend his actions until your hearts content, makes no difference to me what others would have done.

He fired a warning shot and the moose kept coming

Turning the sled around on that trail with deep powder would be virtually impossible

Last, I would not take my eyes off that moose, any moose.
They are out front of my place in WY often and I have had chance to encounter them on the trails. What he did is pretty standard. Make noise, be big, and try to prompt them to move on.
That said, my sidearm would have been unholstered as soon as the moose started approaching and as soon as it proceeded into a run it would have been fired upon.
Moose will kill you - particularly by kicking you to the ground and then stomping you to mush. Not to be messed with.
And the open land is not the Moose's territory any more than it belongs to us.

To me, the only thing the shooter did wrong is not shoot the POS dead when it first approached within 6 feet. If you ask me, the shooter was too kind. Screw screaming, warning shot and wasting ammo. That aggressive POS would be going down, hopefully on the first couple of shots. Where is its mommy? I wouldn't be sticking around either. I'm safe and I'm leaving. Never tasted moose meat. Leave the wounded POS for the coyotes. And I am considered a Liberal in my family.

Okay, a few things. First, the guy was an idiot for continuing to move forward after the moose backed off the first time. Instead, he kept creeping up on it while it was retreating, which triggered the prey instincts in the moose. Hence it coming back. Second, moose are not 5' tall. Try closer to 7' tall at the shoulder. They are freakin' big. And grumpy. And know to injure and kill people. Third, for those of you saying he should have finished it off, that moose was dead. They don't normally sit back on their @$$ like that. Yes, some of the limbs were still moving. But the way it dropped tells me the central nervous system was shut down. It was not suffering or going to get back up. It was dead, the body just hadn't realized it yet. Dead animals can still move like that for a few minutes, as their nerves continue to fire and the muscles respond until they run out of oxygen. I have had sheep that I put down continue to chew and make running motions for several minutes after I put a round through their spinal cord into their brains. They were definitely dead, they just took a while to figure it out.

That was no warning shot. He tried killing from the second he racked the slide. If he only did a true warning shot, and give it a real chance to run off.

That moose definitely needed one final shot before the douche drove off.

Yes, it was a warning shot, and there was a pause before he shot again. During which time the moose started to charge. Remember, time moves a lot more slowly when you are in that situation. He clearly shot over it the first time, then aimed and deliberately shot at it. And no, the moose was dead. Shooting it again wasn't needed. And guess what. By the time he pulled out the gun, his actions were justified. His life, and his son's were in very real danger.

Funny when I met a girl from Alaska and told her I carried a G20, she replied "a moose gun?!"

I saw this vid a while back....

Lets stipulate he did all the wrong things... never the less.... he did them and eventually found himself faced with a 2nd immediately imminent life endangering situation....

is he to allow the moose to kill him because he made mistakes?

Perhaps if he was a little more patient and careful about approaching the moose.. the outcome might have been different....

But too many folk who have been there and done that have said Moose are like terminally crazy angry animals....

It looked like the last shot mighta been a head shot...

Wonder if that was a G20 and what ammo it took to bring down a moose.

Even a small moose can easily kill a full size male, and he did everything he could to get it out of the way. It was looking down, obviously angry, and came at him not once (after already possibly injuring him and kicking him) but twice, and he put it out as he should have.
