Glock 19 or a second 1911

If you are a 1911 fan and you shoot it ok and you train for a few days with a G19, many 1911s suddenly turn into safe queens.
Rent one at the range
Go to the range with a friend who has one
Go to a cal guns shoot and try the G19.Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED
Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)
Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET
Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

You cannot go wrong either way. Two 1911s are cool, and eschewing the plastic is a respectable decision. On the other hand, a good 1911, and a Glock 19, are arguably the only two pistols you need in a handgun battery. (I prefer the HK USP and SIG Classic P-Series to Glock for various reasons, and I even prefer the XD to Glock, but everyone should have at least one Glock 19).Last edited by Libertarian71; 03-08-2014, 3:04 AM.Comment

When you finally wind up getting the G19 you'll wonder how you ever lived without one.Comment

Not picking a fight... Genuinely curious and value your experience/opinion.... or anyone else that wants to comment.
Pure opinion. Even if it were true, which I do not agree with, there are much more critical concerns when choosing a defensive handgun than whether it is comfy. A gun fight lasts fractions of a second...if you're lucky. A few minutes if not. A shorter pull, and easily detectable trigger reset which the Glock has is going to come in much more handy during those few seconds than a grip that feels better and looks pretty.
Lets face it. 99% of the time what a Glock hater really hates is the looks. They'll write 10 page essays trying to blame it on other things. But the truth is, it's usually that they they don't like how the gun looks. They know that's silly, but they can't get passed it. So they blame it on something else, usually just as silly. I used to feel the exact same way. I got over it.
I like the Glock because it works. It works better than anything else I have compared it to...and I have looked long and hard for something better. When I eventually find something better, I'd be just as "fanatical" about liking that! It just hasn't happened yet. Lots of things come very close. The M&P is one of those things. Just not close enough.
I'm the 1% that likes the way my Glocks look (I admit I prefer my OD's & FDE's to my Black's, but I digress...
). I too prefer the ergonomics of the M&P to Glock (+ it's more similar to my 1911's ergo's).
You're saying the Glock reset (which 1911's don't have, the OP is not trained on, and M&P w/ APEX has if you want a LOUD 'glock-like' reset) realistically could be the difference between Life and Death?
Any studies or stats to reference which support that, or is the glock reset really just training / muscle memory due to the fact that you were already accustomed to the Glock platform when you tried the M&P ?
Wait a minute, honestly can't recall if my 1911 has a short/LOUD reset... got to check that. I know my M&P Pro has a short reset (stock, no APEX), although it's not as LOUD as my glocks (that's what I meant
by "glock-like" w/ APEX). I'd bet I could do a mag dump on my M&P Pro just as fast (perhaps faster, still testing speed/accuracy for uspsa) as my G34.
I'm sitting here measuring the reset on my G34 vs my M&P Pro. I will say without getting out a measuring device, the reset on my G34 is no shorter than on the M&P. In fact, it's very close and may be exactly the same
(although the Glock is louder), which tells me that you could do a mag dump on the M&P just as fast as a G34 too... Unless, of course, you have trained to wait to hear that CLICK!!! before you squeeze
the trigger again. If so, you would definitely benefit from the APEX (I believe the primary target audience for APEX is Glock users).
- The M&P has the same grip angle as the OP's 1911. A Glock does not.
- Some people (myself included) believe the M&P has better ergonomics than the Glock.
Yet, the Glock is clearly superior because the reset is louder (?).

A couple things about your post.Pure opinion. Even if it were true, which I do not agree with, there are much more critical concerns when choosing a defensive handgun than whether it is comfy. Glocks are fine guns. But they just don't feel right to me. The grip angle is all catty wampus to me. They don't point well. The other thing is the shape of the grips are blocky. So while Glocks are just fine, there are better guns out there.
As far as the great Glock audible reset. An audible trigger reset is a great training tool but it's usefulness in actual shooting is questionable. I shoot USPSA and 3-gun while I'm not great, I also don't suck. But when I'm in the middle of a stage running and gunning I don't listen nor feel for the trigger reset. It's a strictly muscle memory thing. In a SHTF situation are you going to be listening for that great audible reset? Or are you going to be concentrating your location, the guns location, the front sight, where your finger is, where the target is, what's your next target, and the list goes on and on.
In the end it's personal preference. If you want change you have to put in your 2 cents, you can't just sit on the sidelines and whine.Comment

i was laughing all the way thru this.....im an EX glock hater (oops...i mean FORMER glock hater)
the glock 19 is one of the sexiest handguns i own. my 6" 357 is flashy....but the glock 19 is PLAIN SEXY
my glock 21 is setup better...but the 19 is sexier, and IMO the best handgun ever made
have i said this before ?? lol
but you wrote paragraghs about why the M&P was better just a minute ago....im just sayin
ive never shot an M&P so i cant comment, almost bought one for my son, and if i were in the market for my first PD gun and my kids were still little....i'd go M&P9 for sure
so yes....personal pref
for only $40 more id jump all over it
but $40 more than what ?? is it $540 ? cuz a glock 19 should be $500 or LESS....some stores are an easy $100 more
this is a gunshop local to me...very liberal LE discount, $430 for glock 19's
