Gen 3 vs. Gen 4?

I still have some Glock magazines from my G17 Gen3. Would those work on a Gen4?

i held a gen 4 glock 26 and i personally did not like the way it felt in my hand. the serrations on the back strap really dug into my hand to where it was uncomfortable and kind of hurt. to be honest i did not even feel a size difference in the grip compared to the gen 3 so i bought the gen 3 glock 26. on the other hand i held a gen 4 glock 19 vs a gen 3 glock 19 and the gen 4 felt way better. so id say for the subcompact, go with the gen3 and for all other sizes, go with the gen4

yes they will. however, if they don't have the cut for the magazine catch on both sides of the mag then it will not work when you switch the mag catch to the opposing side.

Don't forget all the extraction problems people had, and to a lesser extent still have, with the Gen 4's.

The gen3's aren't perfect, but I trust them more than a gen 4.

I think the new production Gen3's now come with the problematic MIM extractors that plagued the Gen4's.

In either case, you can keep sending it to Glock to get fixed or just buy the Apex part.

I continue to buy Gen3's because I use GSSF coupons to buy my Glocks. I already have a box full of Glock 9mm hi-caps so the number of 10rnd mags that come with aren't important to me.

I've only held both, and I like the feel of the gen4 with the small backstrap. I have small hands so it fits better. And the grip angle just feels more comfortable than the gen3.

If you are just trying to SSE to get one before the end of the year? Maybe look into the Walther PPQ M2, FN FNS, Springfield XDm. All are striker fire, like glocks. The ppq by far has the best feel in the hand, and arguably the best striker fire trigger out of the box. And i just mention the FN FNS well b/c FN makes good sh*T.

Go with Gen 4. The grip difference is huge. Once you've held a Gen 4, Gen 3 feels so Gen 3. I have 3 Gen 3 Glocks and I love them, but the Gen 4 totally rocks it. I'm picking up a Gen 4 G19 soon.

Glock is also discontinuing some Gen 3 pistols.

In terms of the strength it takes to rack the slide, does one feel easier than the other? I ask since my wife had trouble with the Gen 3.

Got my answer. Or should I say that my wife got her answer. She just put a Gen 4 G19 in jail today!!! Much easier to rack than previous Glocks. She's VERY excited and I'm poor! LOL!

Gen 4 has a better mag release. I have a Gen 4 model 17. Nice pistol. Get one if you can.

The bigger mag release on the gen4 fits me perfect as well as the stock texturing. OP, have you considered that or been able to handle both side by side?

Technically yea there is a lot of difference.

Owning both I'd say no its not worth the extra fee's. But they are nice to have but not a make or break for me. I still wouldn't hesitate picking up my Gen3 over the 4 or vise versa if one was closer than the other.

If you can get a deal on the 4 run it. If not go with a 3 and don't hold any regrets. Besides the back straps I don't notice a difference really. FWIW I own a Gen3 RTF so its pretty similar to the Gen4 grip to begin with.

When the mag release is set up on the standard side, then the Gen 4 Glock can use Gen 1-4 magazines.

When the mag release is set up on the non-standard side, then the Gen 4 Glock can only use the Gen 4 magazines.


simplified Glock magazine generations:
Gen 1 = NFML with mag catch on left side
Gen 2 = FML with mag catch on left side
Gen 3 = FML with mag catch on left and front sides
Gen 4 = FML with mag catch on left, front and right sides
