Wow, thanks guys. I've read through all all tall the replies and I'll be doing some more homework on on them. I think the hardest part is actually spending that much on a pistol rather than another ar15.

Any recommendations for a 1911 within the price range of $1500? Maybe that will be easier for me to spend so I can have some extra for a Holster and ammo. Or is spending the extra $500 worth it on a higher end 1911?

I've been very happy with my Les Baer super tac. I always wanted a 1911,this was my first. I'm only at 1200 rounds or so, but not 1 FTF. All ball ammo. It was super tight when new, it's like it's ridding on ball bearings now.

I think everyone should have at least one quality 1911 and revolver in their collection,even if they only like the rubber guns. The 1911 is a joy to shoot.

If I ever get another 1911, I will order a Wilson Supergrade.

And I have 5 complete ARs and 3 complete lowers lowers waiting myself.

I took a 1911 armorers course, in the course the Smith said the TISAS were the best for the buck. He said they were very well made, I have never handled one.

I'm on the fence about getting one, I need a nudge from the experts to sell me on this Pistol. I'm sure a lot of 1911 owners were in this situation on their first purchase....

If you need a nudge, you probably shouldn't get one. As has been said by many, a 1911 is an enthusiast's gun; you have to be willing to learn to change springs, check your extractor's tension, etc., etc., etc. Because of that, unless you really want one, it's probably not for you. To be sure, go to a range and rent one -- or go shoot with a friend who has one and will let you try it. You'll nudge yourself one way or the other.

If you do decide to buy one, as you can already see from this thread there are many ways to go. Every suggestion has merit. My thought? Buy something one step up from basic so you have better sights, etc. -- something like a Springfield Armory Range Officer or Loaded -- take it a shoot the heck out of it, learn it, and then spend your money on a higher end 1911. You'll appreciate it more and truly be ready for it.

Caliber? I'm a tried and true .45 ACP kind of guy, and that's what most of mine are. But I've been shooting 45's for a long, long time. If you haven't already shot larger caliber handguns you might consider for this first 1911 a 9mm. Cheaper and easier to shoot. Then for your second 1911, your higher end 1911 get a .45 ACP.

IMO, spending a little more on a good 1911 is worth it. An extra $500 to $1,500 is not that much when it is spread out over the useful life of the gun. In addition, if you buy a budget 1911, and really like it, you may want to swap out the MIM parts for non-MIM parts, or do other upgrades. This costs time and money, and maybe multiple trips to the gunsmith. That's why I recommend at least considering a Dan Wesson or Les Baer, which you can get for under $2,000.

For $1500 stainless steel finish Valor or Specialist and be done, best production 1911 you can get. If you want to duty finish it later, send it to DW for their molecular finish or Severns for the "Hard Hat" treatment.

Damascusgunshop.com has the duty finish Valor for $1776. Riflegear has the ss Valor for $1559/ $1589 including SSE.
